Any driving tips from my fellow Arizonans?

We'll be driving to Disneyland (Carousal Inn & Suites) on Sunday morning. My SO says he knows the way :rolleyes1, but I'll be mapping it out just in case :). I would greatly appreciate any driving tips(roads to avoid, construction, etc). The last time my DD and I went with some friends who did the driving, so I wasn't really paying attention(we usually fly). But I remember seeing a lot of construction.
:thanks:

I drive from Phoenix and go I-10 to the 60 (in California, not the one here in Phoenix), 60 to the 91, 91 to the 57, exit at Katella and turn right and then right on Harbor. I was just there a couple weeks ago and the only construction I encountered was on the 91 right after getting off the 60.... it was brief and not bad. This was with an arrival around 3-4 pm on a Tuesday.

We prefer not to get on the 60. Our friends who drive up monthly told us this route. Most people get onto the 60 in Beaumont, we prefer to stay on the 10, less switches/congestion that way.
So we stay on the 10 to the 57.
And get gas in quartzite (use the 2nd exit) before crossing into California. Youll pay more in CA.

If you stay on the 10, do you avoid the narrow, curvy roads through the canyon/mountain area? I get really nervous through there and will go out of my way to avoid it.

snoodledoo, when we drive through those curvy roads, I get in the farthest back seat of our van and lay down, so I know how you feel. That pass petrifies me; everybody drives so fast. I truly hate the drive from Tucson to Disneyland. We are flying this time.

We've moved to flying when the budget allows because this drive is stressful and I always arrive at the DLR tired and/or frustrated. I'd rather deal with the airports than drive the desert run, same with San Diego.
Is it Sunday yet?
Mike

I agree, get gas in Quartzite (and if you get a chance, stop by the Really Good Jerky place - the jerky is good and they have an excellent selection of bottled sodas to try - we look forward to the stop each trip). We usually consult the GPS to figure out which route to take. I-10 to 57, 60 to 91 to 57, 60 to 91 to 55, 60 to 57... it all depends on traffic right then...

I'm a Californian but went to school in Tempe so I'm very familiar with this drive. If you skip the 60, you will miss the switch backs but it is longer to go around. On a Sunday, you may hit traffic from Palm Springs - locals heading back home after a weekend in the dessert. But if you leave early, hopefully that won't be an issue. Definitely use a traffic app if you can.

Watch your speed beginning in Indio - there is a CHP substation there and generally a lot of CHP in the area.

Safe driving and enjoy!

We don't drive we take grey hound but I suggest leaving before 6 am, or after 9 am for less traffic. I am sure others can help with the way to get there.

Thanks everyone!I rarely drive in traffic, can anyone recommend a good Android traffic app?

Oooh I have wanted to try the Really Good Jerky! Thanks for chiming in!

We always stop in at Really Good Jerky and go crazy buying. It really is very good.
And we always eat at Andy's in Indio. Just a little diner but the food is great and the people are nice.

Last trip, we filled up with gas at the Costco in Yorba Linda instead of in Anaheim on the way back. Saved about $0.30/gallon and didn't have to worry about what the real price was if I was using my credit card.

Is it really close to the highway?

We take the I-10 to 60 to 91 route. Traffic can vary but usually it's not too bad. We also stop in Quartzsite for gas at the loves station. We like to leave early am so that you are not driving through the desert areas during peak heat. We can make the drive with one stop in 5.5 hours from Gilbert.

Yep same way I typically go. I'm from Tucson originally (and family still lives there) and now I live right next to DLR so I make the drive in the opposite direction!
Call me crazy but I love the twisties going out on the 60! I would always leave at around 11pm-12am to drive from Anaheim to Tucson so I missed all the traffic and got in about 6am-7am!

If you can make it halfway through to CA before filling up, the cheapest gas on the road (other than Costco) is at the reservation...the Morengo Travel Center, I think it is?

I live in Gilbert too!

We also stop at the the Morengo Travel Center

Live in Chandler, but right at the corner of Gilbert.

I don't mind the drive anymore as long as I take an audio book.
We go 10, 60, 91, 57, leave around 7 on a Sunday and it isn't too bad until we get close to DL
