Any doxie or mini doxie owners out there? Advice needed

My mom had a mini-doxie for 15 years. He was mostly housebroken, but when she went out somewhere, he would go on the floor on purpose. Stubborn little thing. Using a crate is essential and have lots of patience.

Good luck!

We have one who did not get the brains. He is great with kids. He is potty trained as best as possible. It only took him 3 yrs to learn to play fetch. He can do it about 3 x and then needs a nap. In our house, we joke that we got the laziest dog in the world as he sleeps most of the day.

We have a 4 year old, male, long haired mini. I swear, he's the best dog I've ever had. I grew up w/german shepherds, had a husky, and a mini schnauzer. My kids were older, (over 7) when we got him, and he doesn't like strangers, but he loves the five of us!!:lovestruc

nice coat luvjack!
Mine would pull it off and then chew it:) Or play tug of war with it

Thanks everyone! The pics of your babies are just too cute. I ma getting lots of useful info. I have one question: How much grooming do the longhairs require and how prone to mats are they? How often would you need to brush one? I have never had a longhaired dog.

My mom's girl, or my sister as my mom likes to say.
Don't let those sweet baby girl eyes fool you, she loves who she loves and she a nipper with some people, no rhyme or reason behind who she loves and who she hates.

Id post a pic of my boy, but he refuses to look at camera.

Awwww, Autumn always takes her clothes off, she hates them! LOL We still put them on her but she's always trying to take them off. LOL

OP we have a mini Doxie, she's actually a little big for a mini, she's about 11 lbs. :) She's red, her name is Autumn Star. She's actually DD10's doggie, we've had her for 2.5 years. She turns 3 in October. Yes, she's stubborn, she loves to bark at EVERYthing and she occasionally piddles inside, but no doodles, just piddles and she's so affectionate. She's great with kids, we got her for DD'd 8th bday, that year she got a puppy and a trip to DLR :) It was a good year for her. :) So Autumn has always been around smaller kids. I was a bit worried when DD22 brought DGD over for the first time but Autumn was great with her, gave her kisses and let DGD pet her all over. When DGD would get excited and squeal at her Autumn would bark but not aggressively, just talking to her. I was really happy that they did so well together and DD22 seemed surprised. DGD was 9 months when they came home for Christmas, DD22 lives in Idaho so we don't see them as much as I would like. Anyway, I do believe that doxies can be great with kids but kids do need to know how fragile their backs are. We took Autumn to training, she did fine, she graduated with all the other dogs so it was all good. :) Potty training was harder, you just have to be diligent and take your pup out every 30 min or so and praise praise praise when they go, we have a dog door so our dogs (we have a mutt too) can go in and out. Autumn isn't overweight at all and we free feed the dogs, but if she starts to get pudgy we will change that. :) She loves to eat and she loves her fruits and veggies so I always make sure to share those with her. Carrots, corn, cucumbers, those are her favorites. :)

Two of our four dogs our Doxies. Maybe we are lucky but we have not had many training problems, using puppy pads they were both housebroken very quickly. While Dexter (the male) is a little protective of my wife and a little aggressive when someone gets close to her, he thinks he is my best buddy when she is not around. Now Bella (our rescue female) on the other hand is very close to completing her certification to be a certified therapy dog, so i am not real sure where the "hard to train" comes from.

She loves her big brother.

Their weight can be an issue if you are not careful though. Dexter started to get overweight, so we had to watch his diet and increase his exercise. While Doxies do look cute bigger it is horrible to their back and will create health problems.

We have 2 (larger) mini's that just turned 4! Sisters from the same litter. Our boys were 8 & 11 when we got them... no problems at all.

If you can swing it, GET 2!

Housebreaking was really a non-issue for us. Took about 2 weeks. Seriously... 2 weeks. Now, Minnie is my excitement pee-er so we've learned that when people come to visit, we let her greet them on the front step. Problem solved.

The only real issue we have with them is that they hate the dogs next door. Neighbors have 3 poodles & 2 larger mutts. Sounds like a kennel when they're all outside (which is why we are now trying to budget for a privacy fence). And they are my burgler alarm (read that as you will :goodvibes )

Like any siblings, they will occasionally snap at each other. They are not food aggressive in the least but can be "toy" aggressive with each other.

I have to say, I never thought I would be a small-dog-person, especially after having a lab for 15 years but these dogs are absolutely wonderful! Hysterically funny, total love bugs...

Best of luck! Oh, and please post photos when you get your new addition!

ETA: Almost forgot, for those of you who have experienced back issues... Minnie had a minor back issue around age 2. Our vet also offers holistic treatments & did a round of accupuncture. Within hours of coming home she was navigating the stairs again & walking (trotting?) normally. I would reccommend it to anyone.

I will be taking my camera with me this weekend when we go to see the pups. If we find one we loce I will be sure to post pics! Thanks for all the great advice out there!

I've heard this a lot about dachshunds. A lot of people who don't like little dogs tend to love doxies. For some reason, they don't seem like little dogs and I don't know why. Men, in particular, seem to like them (where they might not like other small-breeds) Has anyone else found this to be true?

Definitely true of DH. He grew up with Rotties and German Sheperds for the most part and hates "purse dogs" as he calls them, but loved their doxie and he really likes his aunt's mini doxie.

Definately. In fact, DH was the one who got us looking at doxies!

Our house had been dog-less for a few years. Our kids had a difficult time after our lab died and took a good amount of time before they were ready to have another pet (mind you, we had our lab before our kids so they never knew life without her). DH went to someones house who had a black & tan and came home & said "you have to see these dogs!". That started the ball rolling & we were all hooked!

I think alot of has to with the fact that doxies are silly and let's face it, men are just overgrown kids anyway (and I mean that in the best possible way), they like silly.

We picked out our new furbaby!!! I cannot get the pics off my phone, but you can see her in the breeder's website. She is the last puppy here, called Grace. We are calling her Bella

http://www.darnellsdachshunds.com/Puppies.html

She comes from a litter of English Creams that the breeder wanted for new moma dogs, but they are looking like they will be too small to carry a litter, so we are getting her at a good price. Six puppies in the litter, and every one of them is small, but our girl is the smallest of the group, mabye 4-5 lbs at 6 months old.

Congrats! She looks adorable.

I've got a little mini black and tan (named Sammy), and everyone else has pretty much hit the nail on the head. They are indeed great, funny, loving and loyal dogs, with the personality of a big dog in a little, funny looking but robust body. However, they are stubborn, a wee bit snappy, and they can get a little protective of their people. They do need firm and consistent training. And they will eat until they explode. Also, they are the most awesome dog. Ever.

They do need a 'job' or lots of exercise. Because of their small size, they don't need as much space as bigger dogs, but they do have a lot of energy and can run like the dickens. As well, they have a huge bark and they very much like to use it.

Picture spam time! Here's my little buddy. Mostly a good boy, except for the barking and when he is being a little princess and will not poop in the snow.

I grew up with doxies and all of my dad's family had them. We only had trouble house training one and that one just didn't like to be left alone. All the rest once they where broke they where house broke. My childhood doxie "Skipper" (who when he died broke my dad's heart and he was never able to get another doxie) was a smart one. My dad taught him several tricks but the favorite was "dead dog". They used to call my mom's mom Hester so what do you think my dad did..yep you got it. He trained that dog to play dead dog to this......"Skipper, would you rather look like Hester or be a DEAD DOG"...and of course that dog would just roll over on his back and put all 4 paws up in the air and close his eyes...:lmao:...my grandma knew he wasn't being mean about it but it was the family joke and that dog did it so well!!!! He died when i was in my teens over 30 yrs ago and it still miss him!:sad1:

I don't have any doxxies myself but I do have 3 furbrothers that are Doxies. Once the kids moved out my mom got the dogs lol

This is Winston

And here is Chester (my love baby he is such a cuddler) Notice the bowls?

and last but not least Newman
l_f0a1aa9c11d4d15435c1fca8b25836e8.jpg

All 3 are very different personalities. Winston is the oldest and he's a bit grumpy and he's a barker. Chester is the lovey one but also a chicken. Newman is the funny one who likes to play. He's also the nipper.

My parents have a mini, and he is adorable, he is about 1 yr old and very quirky. He loves being sprayed with the garden hose. My mom will get ready to water the plants he will come running up and sit in front of her with a look like "well are you going to squirt me or what" :lmao: Then he is also excellent at digging holes for her in the yard. Good thing he loves water, cause he gets lots of baths. ;) He is the smallest dog our family has ever had so I think he gets more spoiled because of it.
