um.. folks..i was just asking a question and Most (not all thankfully) were a little harsh and not very..well...disney like. i do have a long trip planned..yes..but that is because we have DVC and it was a gift many years ago before our financial situation became not the greatest. not that it is anyone's business - as i am not a fan of needing assistance - and i know some people on welfare do abuse the system - but i am not one of thse people. i do have 5 kids..yes u can se that from other posts. and we are on a single income so yes that puts us as "low income" in the eyes of the nation. i dont work as i have a young child who would require daycare and i also have a special needs child who needs alot of my time. while some people..even family..have asked why not sell the timeshare..we have not. because it is not my children's fault they were born into this situation and i feel they deserve to have this special memory. so hopefully it trumps all the times i have to tell them i am sorry but they cant go to mcds or the movies every week like all their friends do. or sorry i cant buy them something they want like alot of parents can. we do not have any savings..nor do we irresponsibly have credit card debt..no debt in fact except our mortage. and as far as this trip..refund tax return if you really must know. and it will likely take about 3 years of that. so i am sorry that i offended you by trying to just ask a question. you all responded very hurtfully and i hope it was worth it as i a now trying to regain my composure before my kids see how upset this made me. i think people sometimes forget that things like this just happen to people. not because they are irrsponsible..it is just llife and we should all be a little more considerate. again..sorry i so clearly offended you all.

Well I do have to somewhat agree with BellePrincessBelle that N.E. is ridiculous with the welfare system. I am from MA and whoa it is OUT OF CONTROL...but until it's corrected the "scavengers" will keep utilizing it. Not that ALL of welfare recipients are "scavengers" but I can seriously guess that more than 1/2 are :headache::sick: for crying out loud some of them drive better cars, wear more expensive clothes and wait gotta love when they complain of the "50 cent" co-pay for prescriptions but then turn around and buy $20 in lottery tickets

Sorry, but the first thing I would have sold would have been my DVC.

I really love the disboards. I do. But sometimes some of you are really mean (borderline bullies). Some of you sit behind your computers and type whatever you FEEL. It’s “easy” to judge someone on food stamps – ‘low income’ are often vilified. . Who are YOU to say who should or shouldn’t go to Disney? – whatever their financial situation. I think it’s sad when adults act like this. Put a mirror in front of yourself. Critique the person in the mirror. Have some compassion. Flame away - I have thick skin.

We are a one income family, I cant even afford DVC. Even if it just the maitience fees. I get to take cheap vacations through out the year. We drive as flying is to expensive. I think the welfare system needs an overhaul. How do you waste what your grocery money on a place that may eat up the whole amount. How do you feed everyone when you return home. You just dont want to hear the truth. Not judging you, judging what you are trying to defend that is ok. I want to go to WDW next year and I have to save. And its hard to do even for two people. That would include flying. Sorry if your feelings are hurt. It is hard for people who pay into the system and then people think they have a right to misuse it.

I would hope that if my family needed to use public assistance, and I planned a THREE WEEK TRIP to Orlando, someone would smack the person in my mirror upside the head with a reality stick until I came back down to earth.

I am a DVC owner. A quick look at the points charts tells me that you would need 430 points for this reservation. Figuring the MFs out at $4/pt. means just the MFs would be $1,720.00. If you sold the points instead of going on this trip, you could easily make $4,300.00, leaving you a profit of $2,580.00. And this doesn't even get into the cost of tickets for 6 people from NH to FL, food (oh that's right... EBT...) ground transportation, tickets and Universal.

So yeah, I find it irresponsible, and would hope that someone liked me enough to point it out.

I have never figured out how to quote multiple people. I do not have designer anything. this vaca is our only luxury. and everyone is welcome to their opinions. And I haven't paid dues every year while recieving extra assistance. the assitance is a fairly new and hopefully temporary thing for us. as i know how we are looked at by some because of it even though it really has nothing to do with who we are. but my kids come before other people's quick opinions. my husband got laid off after over 10 years with the same company. we thought we had made it through the danger zone but had not. he was one of the lucky ones to find a new job and is always looking for something better and yes we both have college educations. we are not one of those families that just take and never give. we had an unavoidable situation. in one minute everything can change. these help systems are set up for people like us..who need some temporary help. and it is sad that so many abuse it and give the rest of this stigma.

Vacations are a want, not a need. I cant believe you would defend yourself and say that you need this?

I'm sorry, but if someone is using MY TAX DOLLARS to feed their family while taking Disney vacations and owning a Disney timeshare, then yes, I can express my opinion. Just because you don't share the same opinion gives you no right to call me "mean" or a "bully"--I think THAT is being judgemental. And I'm sorry, if someone is on government assistance, they should NOT be taking luxury vacations.

REALLY - I'M being judgemental. REALLY! You don't think saying hurtful things to people is mean. You don't think that 3 pages (so far) full of MEAN and hurtful posts on a message board is bullying. Many state laws would beg to differ. It's called cyber bullying. WE get it, low income people (according to disboards) don't deserve to visit Disney. WE get it. Post after post is very hurtful. It's too much!

You have created your own stigma. Designer stuff has nothing to do with this. You wouldn't need the temporary help if you sacrificed. Vacations are a big luxury. We couldn't take very many growing up but then again my parents did what THEY could afford. Not what they thought they were entitled to. We still had a great childhood.
Plane tickets cost a fortune now. Somehow you also saved the money for that too. Then there are park tickets etc. I suppose if someone else paid my food bill I too could do the same.
In one minute everything can change. That is true. That is when you need to adjust.I think assistance should be for those who truly need it. Not for those who don't want to change their lifestyles. YMMV.

As you say, in one minute everything can change. You also said you have no savings. Perhaps the tax refund should be used to have some savings so you are able to deal with those minutes that come along.

I wouldnt waste it on somewhere that ate the up the whole month. And not that this is the place to educate people on the SNAP program but it for people whose incomes are so low they can't save money. Actually it is a rule of the program you can't have more than $2000 in cash assets for the entire family..wether you are a family of 2 or 8. I am sure some people who abuse the system find a way around it. But no, we cannot save up at the moment.

Someoneelse posted abunch of numbers with the points and selling them ect. Didn't look into that at all but I remember someone from the boards a number of years ago saying something about it being against the dvc policy to sell/rent points. I do know it is done though. Don't think it matters but if that poster was trying to say there was some huge profit to be made based on what you calculated for the trip planned the points were not from one year. they r across three. so you may not be accurate. but it is time to help my kids with their homework so i am not really going to go looking into that math since their homework is a bit ore important.

I am sorry for your situation. As a mother I know how you want to give everything to your children. But sometimes that is not possible.
It is great that you want to give your children this, but it sounds like you really cannot afford it now. Maybe you and your DH should rent out your DVC points for a few years to pay for the dues and get some extra income, and save up. Once you can get a job and have your emergency fund set, then I would save up for the Disney trip.
Isn't it more important to give your kids the security of safe home with money in the bank than a trip? In my opinion, if you try to do this trip now you will be very stressed about $, you kids will know that and be stressed too, and no one will enjoy the trip.

Your DVC is worth more than $2,000 :confused3 Did you not report that?

It's great, isn't it? I usually only go 5 nights(VALUE) but I see OP is in NH & that is a huge welfare state(well all of N.E. is). I'm gonna take a leap & guess we work part time & got a big, fat EIC refund and that's how this trip is being paid for. Oh, wait that's another form of welfare. But hey, who am I to judge(tax payer thats who) everyone deserves a nice Disney trip.

I don't know. Does being number 32 make it a "huge welfare state"?

WE get it, low income people (according to disboards) don't deserve to visit Disney.

No one said that at all. Low income people can go to Disney. If they take their low income, live within their means and SAVE money to go.

Technically our 2 income family is considered low income (maybe lower middle class, but I doubt it). But we scrimp and save and go without things to take nice vacations every other year (with discount codes). I could never afford DVC maintenance dues. Of course, maybe if I had food stamps and could take my grocery budget to pay dues and fees..........

I have no problem with people who need food stamps or WIC or whatever to survive as a help in a financial need. But when you haven't done all you can do to get off/stay off of it (like sell DVC) and are planning on buying expensive plane tickets, Disney and Universal tickets and Disney dining, then there's a problem with entitlement and not being a good steward of the help out there.

GOOD FOR YOU!!!!! I've been wanting to jump in and defend you.
Honestly, sometimes these boards are full of people you CANNOT mind their business. You asked a simple question. You deserve an answer, not a barrage of questions. And I love how they go and search out informatino on your trip!!!

I read you post and thought, oh, maybe she's bringing along someone who has foodstamps.

You don't need to defend youself or explain yourself to me!!

Enjoy your trip!

Doesnt owning DVC be the same as cash assests? It is property. How do you qualify owning that?

DH has a bumper sticker on his car that says:

Keep working
Millions on welfare depend on you

Yes! What scares me the most for the OP is that she is putting a Disney trip ahead of an emergency fund. Suze Orman would have denied this trip in a second.

OP, I grew up BROKE. Never went to Disney until my honeymoon, was on food stamps, Wic, the whole nine yards. Now, I do everything I can to save save save for the future... Our retirement, kids college savings, etc. Disney isn't at the top of the list.

I don't mean to judge, but the OP should reevaluate her priorities. My DH and I do the split shifts for work. Do I like staying up all night just to turn around and take care of the kids all day? It's not ideal, but you do what you have to do to get ahead.
