Any disney food stores take EBT cards?

It has to be other factors in the equations in regards to the $2000-$3000 assets. I just saw a story on the news a few weeks ago about this girl that won the lottery ($1,000,000). She owed 2 homes & a car. Now, the news never did clarify if she still had any money (I have to infer she didn't) but she still received and qualified for $200 in food stamps.

Yes she was cut off and is probably going to be charged with fraud becasue she did not disclose her change in income.

FYI it's not really bullying if you are telling the honest truth. Just because the truth hurts does not make it bullying.

Really? :sad2: I wasn't going to reply to anything on this thread. I agree with the majority, but I don't like how it is being presented. But, REALLY?

FYI it's not really bullying if you are telling the honest truth. Just because the truth hurts does not make it bullying.

It's not bullying when kids call a 4'5" 250 lbs child "fat" and other mean names because it's true? Picking on the kid with learning disabilities by calling him "retard" and "stupid" isn't bullying because it's true?

You really need to learn what bullying is. Seriously. No matter what else you have said, or how you have said it, that statement is sad. And absolutely incorrect.

It doesn't mean that everyone has bullied the OP, but some really have crossed a line. True or not.

Actually, you might want to read more about this case. She is in BIG trouble for fraud. She was still receiving the food stamps because she neglected to report her new income. Do you really think someone who won a million would be eligible for food stamps?

SNAP is a Federal program which is administered by individual states, but it appears the basic core of the program needs to be changed at the Federal level to encompass all states. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. It sounds to me like the majority of the posters on this thread believe a change should be made in the food stamp program. If you believe this, why not contact your Congressman/Senator? Heck, print this thread out & send it to your Congressman/Senator.

Or, follow in the footsteps of every other disenchanted reformer, send it to a great investigative reporter you know. (The media is turning into the government in case you didn't notice).

OP: You posted on here requesting information. Many people seem to take that as a request for advice. Maybe you didn't want advice but if you ask someone a question, you can't control their response.
My response to you is to think before you post. Imagine the worst case scenario of a response. That's what you're going to get. There are some very opinionated people on this planet.
Some of the advice you've gotten regarding saving your money/examining your priorities are exactly what I would tell my sister/friend in this situation.

She did not qualify for the food stamps, she neglected to update her financial status with the state.

She's also hopefully going to jail.

This was a terrible example to bring up if you are trying to get people to see your side.

That’s not true. It was NOT against the law then or even now. Michigan lawmakers are working diligently to make it against the law, mainly due to this story. It has already passed Michigan’s house.

It is against the law according to the very link you posted; the new law would just help with enforcement:

"To qualify for food stamps, recipients must have income below a threshold. The state last year put in place asset tests for those on welfare and food stamps.

“The person in question hasn’t been eligible for a long time,” said DHS spokesman Dave Akerly.

You might want to actually read that article.

It does state "Amanda Clayton may have broken the law if she continued to accept food stamps after her income and assets exceeded the legal limit for assistance."

YOU read the article - I did. What she did might be crazy but not against the law. It was made VERY clear on the news that what she is doing is not illegal as of now. But they are working very hard to make sure this law changes soon. If she reapplied and then didn't report the income, whole new different story.

Shocked? No, not when the OP started out with the original question. It is very sad.

I admit that I was shocked to see this thread. Actually, I don't know if Food Stamp Cards are usable across state lines. Ours here in Georgia are Peach Cards or Peach State Cards.

However, I don't think the Mouse has decided to start taking Food Stamps just yet.

The article that YOU POSTED says it was illegal. The new law is that they have to run their SS# against welfare records when they win.

um.. folks..i was just asking a question and Most (not all thankfully) were a little harsh and not very..well...disney like. i do have a long trip planned..yes..but that is because we have DVC and it was a gift many years ago before our financial situation became not the greatest. not that it is anyone's business - as i am not a fan of needing assistance - and i know some people on welfare do abuse the system - but i am not one of thse people. i do have 5 kids..yes u can se that from other posts. and we are on a single income so yes that puts us as "low income" in the eyes of the nation. i dont work as i have a young child who would require daycare and i also have a special needs child who needs alot of my time. while some people..even family..have asked why not sell the timeshare..we have not. because it is not my children's fault they were born into this situation and i feel they deserve to have this special memory. so hopefully it trumps all the times i have to tell them i am sorry but they cant go to mcds or the movies every week like all their friends do. or sorry i cant buy them something they want like alot of parents can. we do not have any savings..nor do we irresponsibly have credit card debt..no debt in fact except our mortage. and as far as this trip..refund tax return if you really must know. and it will likely take about 3 years of that. so i am sorry that i offended you by trying to just ask a question. you all responded very hurtfully and i hope it was worth it as i a now trying to regain my composure before my kids see how upset this made me. i think people sometimes forget that things like this just happen to people. not because they are irrsponsible..it is just llife and we should all be a little more considerate. again..sorry i so clearly offended you all.

I personally apologize for all of the hurtful replies. I totally understand where you're coming from.

One difference is that the "fat" or "stupid" kid, didn't do anything wrong (and potentially illegal) and didn't ask for or deserve what they're getting.

The OP came here regarding a question on Food stamps that helped paint a picture of government fraud (or at best abuse) regarding the welfare system. Many people here don't like to pay taxes to support someone that in our opinion really shouldn't be getting the assistance while taking a nearly 3 week vacation that when counting the points/tickets/airfare and the like might hit $10K or more in costs......all while eating for free thanks to us taxpayers.

Yes it is illegal! Michigan currently works on a honor system. If your income changes, you are required to inform them. If you don't report your increased income, you are breaking the law.

I am sorry if you feel that your children "deserve" this because it is not their fault what they were born into. Every child imo "deserves" all the luxuries in life simply because they ARE kids. However, that does not mean they all get it. I don't know anyone who goes to the movies every week (and I do have some very wealthy friends), nor do I know anyone who constantly takes their kids to mcdonalds either. I also do not know any child who gets everything they want. Even the ones with tons of money. Just because you think they "deserve" doesn't mean that everyone else should finance it for you. You mention that you can't work because of childcare issues. Work the opposite shift as your DH. Plenty people do that. Voila! No childcare costs.

Sell your DVC. You can't afford food but can provide a $$$ vacation? Really? I don't understand? Park tickets and dining is expensive. Somehow you have to have saved for that. How? Forget it- I know how.

I know that I am being a little harsh but it burns my butt that so many work so hard to do the best they can and others are simply standing with their hand out. :headache:

I'm willing to bet this person works harder taking care of her special needs child and baby than most people who are on here bullying her do.

No it doesn't it states she might be and on the news they made clear that it would be forgery only if she re-apply and didn't report the income. She did make herself look nuts by stating she knew the money was there. Didn't she just win the money like this fall - I don't know? Look, I will defend the OP and the name calling issue/bullying thing all day. I have NO desire to depend Ms. Amanda. NONE. So go on! BLOOP!:surfweb:
