Any Deals Out There For August Flights ??

Silly question I know, but I potentially have a big dilema.

I booked our August Trip last September and we are taking my younger brother for his 16th. Well wind forward 6 months and we have decided to change our DD6 to a different school. If she gets into her new school I have just realised that they go back on 2nd September not the 7th as her current school does. We are due to fly home on the 2nd. :scared1:

Although I don't mind taking her out around the holidays, I have always said I would never do so at the beginning of the school year. Let alone a new school. Her current school is quite happy to sign of up to 10 days aslong as you avoid certain dates. The new school won't entertain it, I don't even want to ask.

So yesterday I was frantically looking to move forward a day but with Virgin the difference in price is around £2k. I think we got a great deal when booking last year £5300 for 5 for 10 nights at GF with tickets and FD. I could change our holiday with Virgin to totally different dates next year and book indepenantly for this August but as expected the flight prices are a problem. I've even looked at going a day earlier and flying into Miami. Which we would probably prefer anyway.

I can get indirect US Air flights for around £1,600 but I am a very nervous flyer and don't know how I would do with the 2 flights and would spend the whole time worrying what sort of plane the internal flight would be. Anything to small and I would flat refuse to get on it.

I could come home a day early but I was have trouble fitting everything into the 10 days let alone losing one.

I jus don't know what the right thing to do is :confused3

Hmm...when will you know if your daughter gets into the new school? Is it pretty much a sure thing?

If you are flying back on the first day of school, that's only one day missed (and honestly - not much happens that first day, right?), which doesn't seem bad. Seems as if you'd avoid a lot of stress if you keep things as is, and forgive yourself that one day. The school doesn't need to know WHY she is missing that first day, only that it's a prior arrangement that cannot be changed. Good luck no matter what you decide to do!

Just a thought - double check that's the actual start back date for the new school.

My DD's school officialy re-opens on the 3rd but they're putting 2 staff training days in so they don't actually return until Monday 7th.

I know I shouldn't be beating myself up over one day and there isn't alot they could do if she isn't there, but I didnt really want to start off like that.

We won't know for definate for another couple of weeks, but it's pretty likely. She has to go in for an assessment day (not as bad as it sounds) so when she does that I will test the water with the first day.

I just couldn't help to start looking and and will kick myself if we have to and I miss a good price.

When you price up these flights most websites will tell you what plane is used on both legs. You can then look at www.seatguru.com and get full details of layout, facilities etc. I don't think US Airways has anything smaller than Boeing 737/757 or Airbus 321 on its Charlotte-Orlando route.

Very difficult dilemma.

I can sympathise because we in a way have been impacted in a similar situation, my wife is a teacher. Whilst my son's school are very sympathetic mainly down to Joshua being special needs, my wife's school are the opposite and very strict (overly so in my opinion).

As anyone going in summer knows especially on fly-drive's the prices drop dramatically at the end of August, however due to term time starting early September it is difficult getting a 2 week holiday in.
For our next holiday in 2010 we initially looked at doing what you have done, but with Virgin miles available to us from this years holiday, we are waiting and just booking flight only later this year (that's the plan anyway).

If I was you? I would leave the holiday booking as it is I am sure you would have gone earlier in the summer if you could have, it really is frustrating the way they drop the prices right at the end of the month...like I say I would just go with your original booking, but obviously you need to feel comfortable with that.
