How many current or former military personnel do we have here? What branches are represented here? Some questions for those who have, or are now serving:

1) What branch were/are you in?
2) Do/did you like it?
3) Would you do it again?
3) Favorite duty station or port of call?

Spouses can weigh in on this as well.

For me:
1) I served in the Navy from '89 to '92. Was supposed to serve a couple of years in the Active reserves but due to downsizing that got cut.
2) For the most part I did like it. I had bit of an attitude though, not a lot, just enough to get me into trouble a couple of times. But it took a good butt chewing from my dept head to straighten me out and fly straight.
3) Yes I would. But I would change my attitude the second time around.
4) Because I had such a short time in, I only had one duty station, the USS Dubuque LPD-8 in Sasebo, Japan. I did however like Malaysia. Great place, nice beaches, I also liked Hong Kong, don't know why, just did. Who's next?

I am a veteran!

I joined the Air Force Reserves in 1980. I loved it so much that I went active duty in 1982 and served until 1988 (I got out cause I was preggers and hubby was civil service and we didn't want to be apart with a baby).

I served in Columbus, OH, then Tyndall AFB in Panama City, FL, then Holloman AFB, NM, then McChord AFB in Tacoma, then back to Holloman.

I really loved serving. Alot depended on my squadron and who my boss was. Both times at Holloman I had lousy bosses (old school - sexist, good ole boy). The military helped me grow up since I was away from home and HAD to learn to make my own decisions, right or wrong.

Times have changed so much and so has our military and their commitments. I don't THINK I would serve today because the military has been downsized so much and personnel stretched to their limits (one deployment after another) that its very difficult to have a family life.

My favorite duty station is a tie between Tyndall and McChord! Loved the bases, loved my superiors, and loved the mission.

Hollomon huh? Wow, talk about out in the middle of no where. Oh sure, it's near Alamogordo, but I don't think Alamogordo is all that big. Kind of pretty being right there next to White Sands.

DH is in the Air Force, 12yrs
Love it
Definitely
We have enjoyed every place we have been so far but our favorite would either be Nellis AFB, in Las Vegas or our current base Ramstein AB in Germany

CapeCodTenor, I still live here in Alamogordo! Have you visited here?

My DH was in the Army on active dutry from 1994 - 1998 and then in the Reserves from 1998-2002.
He loved it when he was in it, but once 2002 came around he couldn't wait to be done. We were getting married and he was ready to move on with his life.
He was stationed in Ft. Knox, kentucky, Ft. Benning, GA and Camp Casey, South Korea. Although Korea was SOOO far from home, he liked it there for the time he was in. He liked Ft. Benning alot as well, since that is where he met me :lovestruc

I haven't stoped and visited Alamogordo in years...I did, however, driven through there around Thanksgiving of '05. My dad use to own an autoparts store on Main Street, I think that's the name of the street, it's the highway...anyways, the building is no longer there, but it's the parking lot between the Burger King (or is that McDonalds, I forget, it's been too long) and Long John Silvers. The last time I visited was in high school, over 10 years ago. What kind of town is it? I remember it as being kind of a sleepy town.

DW is a vet. Army from 1991-2001 - medically retired. She tried to get back in when the Afghan war came around and then again with Iraq but was turned down both times (she had double knee replacements). She would definitely do it again. She did her share of complaining about the Army but nobody else better "dis" them :). I think she liked Walter Reed/Bethesda the best. Liked Fort Bragg the least. I am old enough to have been in the draft pool for Vietnam, but my number was high and they were winding down so I was never drafted. I never served, but not because I actively didn't want to - just never occurred to me.

What you seem to be conveniently fogetting is Alamgordo is very close to some absolutely beautiful mountains and scenery ;) . I lived in Roswell my whole life until I went to college.
There is Ruidoso and Cloudcroft very close which I still miss being close to. We had several properties in Hondo (next to where Sam Donaldson's ranch) which is close to Alamagordo as well.

It's the same way for me and the Navy, don't "dis" 'em. It's like being an older brother, only the older brother can "dis" the little bro, or sister. In the Army Navy game...NAVY ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!! :cool1: :cool1:  :cheer2: Sorry Galahad, couldn't resist.

You're right, I totally forgot about that. Sorry about that...didn't mean to belittle Alamogordo like that. Show's how long it's been since I've been there. I pretty much stayed on the east side of the mountains, unless I was driving down I-25, which didn't happen very often. Again I apologize.

Alamogordo has grown alot. I first arrived here in 1985 and alot has changed in that amount of time. Shopping basically sucks around here. We either go to Las Cruces, El Paso, or Albuquerque. You really get used to the long distances. I remember years ago, telling my sister who live in Columbus that dd17 and I were going 250 miles to the zoo (in ABQ) and she couldn't believe it.

DD has lived here her whole life and will not go to college here. She wants to go to school "somewhere that has culture and more than 10 stoplights!" :rotfl:

Army wife here. Dh has been in nine and half years and I think we are going the rest of the way since he just reenlisted in Dec for 4 more. I don't know if that means he likes it or just acclimated it to it. Though I think he really likes it except for the nights when we get the calls that he soldier is in jail for trying to kill a fake deer. :rotfl:

Right now we are Ft. Campbell, KY (AIR ASSAULT!!!)

The list in order:

Bragg'97-'99
Germany '99-'01
Ft. Campbell summer '01
Afghanastain Fall '01
Ft. Campbell '02-Jan '03
Iraq '03-Feb '04
Ft. Campbell & Ft. Gordon & other TDY '04- summer '05
Iraq '05 -??

Next we are recruiting and won't get those orders until after he is done with his recruiting school. I don't care where it is but I am ready to get away from here. You get soo tired of the politics and other measuring stick contests. All the good wives and soldiers they just drain until nothing is left. We do like the army life though. Just takes time getting used to it.

1 - I was active duty Air Force from '93 - '97.
2 - Afraid not...I'm not the type that does well following unquestionable authority :teeth: It had it's plusses, but the minuses far outweighed them, IMO.
3 - Hmm....tough question. In the situation I was in (burned out on college, father just passed away, ended a long term relationship with my girlfriend, needed a change of scenery badly) I might have to think about it. I got a career out of it, but I'm not sure if it was worth it even then.
4 - Since I was at the Pentagon all four years, that kinda limits my choices. ;) Keesler AFB in Biloxi - where I did my tech school - was nice too, though.

Dh was in the Navy for 20 years
he was on subs and was a nuke ET
He loved it and we would do it again.
Our favorite duty station was Kings Bay, GA.

DH was in the Army National Guard for about 7 years. He would have stayed in had he not taken a job out of state, or moved as much as we have. He was a combat engineer, and was just about to start OCS when he got out.

My FIL was in for over 25 years. Got out shortly after serving in Germany during the first gulf war. He'll start getting retirement benefits in October when he turns 60.

No problem! :) When she was posted at Bethesda, the running joke among the Army docs that were working at a Navy hospital is what "costume" the Navy was going to wear that day. Maybe the "good humor" suit. ;)

1)Dh is a former Marine

3) Back then? Yes, no question about it. But present time, no chance of him ever re-enlisting.
4) He was in Naples, Italy for 2 years and loved it. Also stopped in Israel on his way back from Iraq and loved the country & people.

1) What branch are you in? The Air Force 10 years
