Any concerns about the posts about bed bug problems at WDW resorts?

I was reading and it kinda freaked me out a tad. Any truth to this or is this just rumor or a few bad incidents? I just find it hard to believe that with Disney standards that they would allow this problem to exist. Thanks in advance :)

We haven't seen it and If we did we would make sure they didn't just move us a manager would be involved to get it cleared up.

I have never had a problem with Disney addressing a problem that I presented in a calm just the facts matter.

Bugs and dirty people are a fact of life and they came from somewhere.

I also know they are hard to get rid of once infested but I don't see Disney letting it go.

We had a problem with the beg bugs at our recent stay at Pop Century. I am not trying to alarm anyone, just to let you know to check for them when you check into any hotel.

Housekeeping tried to alert us that they found the bugs, but the message was never recorded on our voice mail. So, we slept another night in the bed! Finally, they called again the following morning, and just caught us as we were on our way out the door. I would have appreciated another call, a note, someone coming to our door -- even not making up the bed so we would at least be alerted that something was wrong!

They washed all of our clothes and replaced our luggage, but when I tried to speak to a manager about the lack of communication - he acted like it was no big deal. I tried not to make a scene, but it was frustrating that management was not sympathetic to our ordeal. We tried to make the best of the vacation, because we were there - my first time - but it was hard to sleep that next night.

My advice is just to check your room when you get there and keep your luggage, etc. off the floor just in case.

I agree - it is always good to check. You never know if the guest before you carried them in. Even a great, clean hotel can have bed bugs.

Forgive me for being dense, but I've never seen a bed bug...we're leaving for POFQ on Sunday and although I'm sure it will be fine - what should I look out for?!

Do they just show up in bedding or could it be any soft furnishing (carpet, curtains etc)? How big are they? I hate bugs!! :scared:

There's a picture of them on Wikipedia. I've never seen one of them before either. I guess if there are people posting about them, I'll have to keep my eyes open.

They're nasty looking things, but they're hard to spot as they only come out at night.

The leave little red dots......behind them as they move around. These little dots are leftovers from biting people. If you see those stains on mattresses or sheets, chances are a bed bug has been there. And where there's one, there's probably hundreds.

Upon arriving in your room, pull up the spread, sheets and the mattress cover on both beds. Look carefully at the mattress on both sides. If you see brownish/reddish stains along the cording of the mattress, BEWARE. If you see the bugs (small, brownish, sesame seed sized) in the bed frame, headboard, or on the wall behind the bed, run really quick! Move your things out of the room immediately and walk back to the desk to tell them what you have found.

I have stayed at the Contemporary, POFQ, and at Pop Century two times, and have not run into any problems. Not saying there can't be a problem, just that I have not yet had the misfortune of running into one.

When you check into your room, peel back the sheets. Check along the edges of the mattress, where the binding is. If you see any spots of 'dirt' you may have a problem. See, the issue isn't really about cleanliness. It's the fact that people put their clothes away, then put the luggage on the floor, or beside the bed. The little critters can be in the furniture, so your clothes could carry them home. Or the little critters get into the luggage and ride home. Then, they are deposited at the next spot. They would qualify for some hefty frequent flyer miles!!!
My dd's camp had an issue with them last summer. They had a pest person come in and infumigate, but evidently it didn't completely work. When my dd's session started, the bugs were spotted three doors down from her room. The kids were all put into a field that night to sleep. All the beds were tossed out, into a huge bonfire and replaced with all metal bunks, with new mattresses!!! I can tell you that dd's luggage stayed in the garage, with her clothes. The clothes went directly into the wash, and then high heat dry!!!! No problems.

I am feeling all itchy:eek:

How easy is it for the hotel to get rid of them if they do find them?

If they catch them confined to just one room, it's pretty easy. Remove the mattresses, replace with new ones, and a really high powered cleaning done of that one particular room usually solves the problem. That's why guests are actually doing them a big favor by reporting these things as soon as they notice something. Once they spread to other rooms (major infestation), it becomes a matter of closing down a whole wing, floor or building.

Seeing that we don't usually hear multiple reports of bed bugs at WDW Hotels, I assume they do a really good job at eradicating the problem.

this was a major issue at Disneyland last year. Not just the hotels at Disneyland, but hotels in Southern Calif. There was a major outbreak. They are not easy to get rid of. Wherever you stay, always look for them. Cleanliness of the hotel is not the issue. I live in Massachusetts, and there have been two furniture companies that have had to replace mattresses, and couches that were purchased brand new, because the people who bought them reported bed bugs in the furniture. In one incident, the family purchased a bedroom set, and they had to move out of their home, because the problem became so bad. Some hotels actually have dogs that can sniff these critters out. If you find them, please report it immediately, and don't bring them home with you. By the way, don't unpack your clothes unless you've done a thorough check in the drawers also. They love to hide in the screw holes of furniture.

Ewwwwww!!! :scared1:

And I thought the first thing we'd do when we arrive was flop onto the bed after the 9 hour flight...not any more! :magnify:

Thanks for all the advice :thumbsup2

Actually you shouldn't just jump onto the bed and relax. :sad2: In fact, the Dateline show recommended that you remove your bed spread. It seems bedspreads are not washed as often as the sheets..after each guest. It's advised to fold it down and place it in the closet. You might also want to check behind the head boards. It's usually pretty easy to do. I did so at a couple of Day's Inn..and the like. They pop right off the wall. If there are two of you..just lift up on each side. Apparently this is a place that they hide. Also they said if you should see spots of the walls or ceilings that are brownish/redish in color..that's from the bed bugs. It has nothing at all to do with cleanliness...even the finest hotels and resorts are experiencing this. Dateline indicated it is a result of foreign travel. That these critters were eradicated in the US in the 1950's due to the pesticides we used back then. Only they don't use them outside of the US. Sooo....there you go! They traveled..I believe they should have had passports! :lmao: It only takes but a minute or two to check the room...and it will give you piece of mind for the remainder of the trip. They also recommended that you not place your clothing in the drawers provided in the hotels...as they hide in the crevices of the drawers..and are easily packed up and brought back home. Once home, you can loose your carpeting and furniture trying to rid the house of them.:scared1: We have had a couple of people on the news here on Long Island after bringing the creatures home in their luggage after vacationing.

YUCK!!! :scared1: I'm going to put this on my list of things to do when we check in, then I'm forgetting about it. I'm at my daily limit of things to worry about. Carry on. ;)

I need to remember also about bed bugs - I'm so used to NOT having them, it can be hard to remember to check. :)

Alright ya'll...I have a hard enough time with hotel beds thanks to that 20/20 report several years ago about the unwashed comforters and various bodily fluids :scared1: . Now I am totally freaking out! My 5yo brought lice home from school this year and we are on month 2 and counting of trying to get rid of the little buggers. So I have NO doubt that bedbugs are hard to eradicate as well.

Okay...I am completely freaked out now. Disney better watch out when we arrive because I will be going over that room with a fine tooth comb AND a magnifying glass. :rotfl:

I have lots of hotel stays under my belt now and I've never encountered bed begs, not even at WDW!

I still do a quick check though, but I'm looking for other things as well, not just bed bugs. It's just common sense to look "under the covers" before you get under them in a strange bed. My DH laughs at me all the time for doing the check, but I still do it!

Florida is known for all sorts of critters.
