My school has just decided that they need a cheerleading/pep squad and they put me in charge of it all. I haven't been a cheerleader since 1983 and know times have changed.

We don't have a football team ... only a basketball team (at this point). If I'm not mistaken, basketball begins in Jan., so I will have time to prepare the girls. I figured that I'd have grades 5-8 and take anyone who is interested (no cuts, tryouts). It's a small school, so that's the reason taking those interested. Should grade 5 be my cut-off?

Where do I even start? I *think* we might have some old cheerleading uniforms (will check it out) but that is the least of my concerns! Can you recommend any cheer instruction videos or magazines?

I'm not expecting to turn my girls into "Bring It On" girls ... just want to keep it simple for now.

Thanks for any help/advice! Much appreciated!

i did pop warner.. you can get info on the net that is where we got some cheers. also contac a highschool cheer team for more help

I would search for some easy basketball cheers. When I was in school, our coach typed them up and gave them to us in a folder. that way we had all the cheers, handy. they were listed in order so we knew what cheer to do if we needed a rebound, a foul or if we just scored.

what is your school mascot... Ill try looking up some cheers for you

Funny thing ... we don't have one yet! Let me give you some background!

I teach at a school that's been around for about 125 yrs. My grandparents and parents went to the school! If you can even believe this, we've never had a mascot! Our old principal was w/the school since, I swear, the beginning of time and was a real dud (and much in need of retirement). She was never one for sports teams, school spirit, etc.

End of the school year, she "retired" -- actually, they retired her b/c she would've stayed on til she died. Finally, someone saw the need for a new principal, some fresh blood and fresh ideas. We have a great, young principal who is totally into things. He has sent every student a letter w/a questionairre asking them to choose, from a list of 10, the mascot they'd like best. He'll take the top 2 answers and we'll have a student/faculty vote and see what it is!

So, no luck there w/a mascot as of yet!

Thanks for the offer! Do you know of any good websites to go to? Feel free to PM me or post 'em here!

Thanks so much!

Warmly,

How many girls are you planning to have on the squad? I think I'd just start with 7&8th graders. Especially if this is the first year. Work out the kinks and then you could add lower grades if you have the time, energy and money. Sometimes "more isn't merrier".

I coached the Kindergarteners and First graders this yera for our church league.

A lot of the cheers were juts modfied from the bigger girls cheers though. All are "clean" as in no suggestive movements or words.

This is the program we use. www.upward.com you can send for a free packet and maybe there will be some info on cheering/cheers there. I seem to remember they had a DVD with cheers on it but dont know where that came from.
