I have a question for an expert. My friend is having to pull up all her almost new carpet because it's rippling in some rooms. The installer is replacing it for free saying it was a carpet "defect".

I'm looking online and seeing that most rippling is caused by installer error (i.e. they didn't stretch it correctly). It makes me think that the installer screwed up and is now saying it was a defect to cover themselves. Could this be true and also, is the carpet reusable?

Yes and yes. I am not a carpet installer but I have a few friends that do and rippling is usually because it was not stretched right but it could be a defect. Usually the solution is to re-stretch the carpet so getting all new is a bonus. Yes the carpet should be reusable but if it is a defect in the carpet it might have to get sent back to the manufacturer for inspection and they won't get it back. If the installer is going to toss it, I would ask to keep it for a basement or something.

If the installer is replacing it as defective, it probably is. Otherwise his time and trouble is coming out of his pocket. An installer makes little money on one room. Not all carpets can be stretched, but most are, they should be power stretched, not just kicked in. Also, using the wrong thickness of pad can cause ripples, thicker pad is not always the best.
