My bathroom walls are a disaster. There is vinyl GLUED (yes glued) on top of plastic tile. Under the tile is a mystery. How can I fix these walls on a budget? SHould we sheet rock over them? SHould I rip off the vinyl? The tile?

We really want to sell our house, but the bathroom looks so awful. It is a tiny bathroom, and the only one in the home, so I need somehow to make it look decent.

DH is a carpenter and says you should rip out the vinyl and plastic and then sheetrock.

Hi there. My husband is a carpenter. He suggests that it ALL be torn down - down to the wooden studs. Start from scratch by putting up new drywall and tile. It will never look right if you drywall over the mess that's there. Good luck :thumbsup2

If you don't do it yourself, the buyers will probably ask for a reduction on the cost of replacement, especially since it's the only bathroom. You'll probably get a good return on it if you complete it properly.

Does anything need to be done to the floors or fixtures?? Ripping the drywall out and replacing it properly with concrete board shouldn't be too hard. The ceiling might be hard, but you can rent the drywall lifter from home improvement stores.

If you do rip it out and put up new drywall, remember to get the kind specific for bathrooms. It is different from regular sheetrock in that it resists moisture.

Ya, for any repairs I recommend a home repair book. Tons of info and tips like what type drywall to use in a bathroom. I have used one to help diagnose a doorbell problem, among other things.
