Any Canuck heading down March break

let's try to keep the judgemental comments to ourselves while allowing others to share what they are planning on doing, or not doing. We have no idea what anyone else is dealing with during these very trying times, whether it be a conflict with our own view points, direct impact to household income (yes, some of us are already being hit hard by the threat of and now actual tariffs), and others are worried about the safety of family members who are in a targeted marginalized group.

I think we can safely say that at the end of the day, we all love Disney or we wouldn't have joined this social media group.

@ilovetotravel1977 Keep those blinders on. I'm sure you'll sleep much more soundly than the rest of us who are worrying about our economic futures.
huh? I have no blinders on. I follow what is going on, and AM concerned about the economic fall out of all this.

What's going on right now isn't worth losing $10,000. That is a ton of money, and I would take the trip because you WANT to.

We are just back yesterday from 8 days at WDW. We are DVC so our resort was prepaid in dues, tickets were bought last year with airmiles. For us, it was hard to go and hard to be there. It was hard for us to leave the anger at home, always in the back of our minds, especially being surrounded by Americans carrying on their lives as usual.

We went with the goal of spending as little as we could. Flew Air Canada and spent $200 USD plus groceries from Publix (brought the food we could). Mears, tips, split the odd quick service meals and one gift from the Japan pavillion, that was it.

Not sure going forward with DVC. Selling and renting feeds their economy. We will cancel December's trip and have stopped planning a trip to Aulani. Most likely use our points at Disneyland Paris, not the best return but a good option for us. I will still go back to WDW if my ill daughter decides she is healthy enough and wants to. For us this is the most important reason not to sell.

We are in a lousy situation right now. We have (had?) a Disneyland trip planned for early April and are now looking at cancelling.

When I looked into what it would cost to cancel, this is how it broke down for us:

Flights: my sister can cancel her flights and get a credit with WestJet. Dh and I can cancel the WestJet part and get a credit but it am still trying to get an answer out of United. Potential loss for non-cancellable flights is around $1000.

Disneyland tickets: We bought them ages ago from a UK vendor and can hold onto them, while it will cost us more to flip them into current tickets the next time we go back in a few years, at least they will retain their value.

Star Wars Night tickets: total loss as they cannot be returned. Aprox $800 lost

Car service from Lax and back: no loss as I can cancel this.

Ferry to and from Vancouver: I should be able to cancel and only lose around $20

Airport parking: same as the car service, I can cancel and get my $ back.

Airport hotel: can be cancelled with no penalty.

Accommodations: ugh, this is the big one. We rented a 2 bedroom DVC suite at the Grand and unless the owner can find someone to take on the reservation we will be out the whole amount paid, $7,700.00

So, if we cancel, we are looking at a loss of almost $10,000

Anyways, just a little vent from me about the state of things right now.
I would definitely go and enjoy it if I was in your situation. I understand some of the emotions right now but losing $10k would be silly IMO

Just a reminder folks…. The President has been in power for 45ish days. We still have another 46 months of this nonsense.

If you speak to Americans, the majority don’t care or don’t even know what’s happening.

If possible, spend your money in Canada. One day this will blow over and you can take a nice long Disney trip at a deluxe resort but for now, your country needs you to keep your money at home.

I have no issue at all with the “if possible, spend your money in Canada” for those that chose to do so but are you suggesting you would be willing to lose $10k by cancelling a trip?

Nope. Unfortunately, I’d still go. If I was loaded with cash and didn’t care about $10k, then I’d cancel. Or, if I went but knew I’d be upset or miserable I’d cancel in that spot. But no way I’d give up $10k and not get anything in return. Rather have an another Rolex though. 😂

I guess my comment is more for the people considering booking a trip. Check out Vancouver with so much to see and do.

Unfortunately, all the MAGAt's believe every word the orange clown utters from his mouth, so we treat them unfairly, we are ripping them off, they are subsidizing us...blah, blah, blah. That said, I can't believe some Canadians are being refused service. Keep in mind many Americans do not feel that way. Just read an article that a couple in Michigan crossed the border for a meal and paid for everyone's meal to show their appreciation and support for Canadians.

I don’t think any particular individuals are, but Canada, while it fully benefits from membership, has shirked its NATO responsibilities for decades. It is currently doing so in the range of tens of billions of dollars per year. So yeah, I can see why that would offend.

Regardless, I didn’t vote for the current president, and my family still enjoys going to and supporting local businesses; whether they be here in NY or very close, in Ont. Not everything is yes/no, black/white, up/down.

Stay well.

I am here right now,,WDW,,and my girls fly down tomorrow. We wouldnt have lost 10k but we decided not to cancel. We are not booking anything else for the time being. I drove down and stayed at HHI for couple of nights. Now I didnt spend as much as I normally would, and the same will be here at WDW. We are going to enjoy our time, not talk any politics, hug Mickey and head home.
I would say, dont cancel, DL is wonderful and The Grand is amazing. No where else can you leave your hotel and be in the park in less than 5 mins. My girls even watched my do yoga early in the am in the park from our room balcony. Where else,,,no where. Go enjoy,,do not feel guilty,,money is spent, you just are not adding to it.

4 weeks from today is my next trip to WDW. My main concern is Cheeto trying to start a real war or invoking martial law before then 🤪 I don’t put anything passed his delusion. Is it 2028 yet?

I see Disneyland is trying to bribe the Canadians with a ticket deal 🤣 We might take advantage only because my SIL & Niece are American and they have family in the Anaheim area who we may go visit this summer.

I will agree that Canada needs to increase defence spending, however 40,000 Canadians served in Afghanistan most in combat missions, not exactly shirking responsibilities.

I’m not looking to be political. Just facts. While nice that over the course of approximately 20 years, approx. 40,000 Canadians served there, over that same time frame, more than 800,000 Americans served there. Several thousand Americans died there. It was a ‘joint’ nations endeavor where again, America contributed the lion’s share.

NATO contributions matter. Benefit from the alliance? Contribute at least the minimum that was agreed to, not tens of billions of dollars less, per year, than the minimum agreed to.

Canada and US have different priorities. Canada doesn't prioritize defence spending. US does. Canada prioritizes social security programs. US does not. We can debate until the cows come home and never agree what is too little or too much. That's irrelevant. None of it justifies the US actively trying to destroy Canada or wanting to annex my country out of, let's be honest, greed. Americans can't have everything, produce everything, consume everything. Nothing makes America more entitled to prosperity than any other country. We are all human beings who want to live, eat, work and be happy. Aren't we all better off as friends than enemies?

I 100% agree with your last 2 sentences. The others, not as much.

If “Canada doesn’t prioritize defence spending”, that’s its right. But in that case, don’t enter an alliance (which it voluntarily entered), remain a member of that alliance, yet contribute a lot less than it promised to commit. That’s unfair to the alliance members that are actually contributing what they promised to contribute.

The point is that the US isn't trying to destroy Canada due to insufficient defense spending or drugs or migrants crossing the border. The US wants our natural resources. It's greed and imperialism. The Canadians who are worried about economic collapse or worried the US may go so far as to launch a military invasion if economic devastation isn't sufficient to make us capitulate are understandably hesitant to in any way support the country threatening to do so. You are entitled to your opinions but coming here to attack Canada is, to put it as politely as I can, unwelcome. This discussion is for Canadians who love to go to WDW but are angered by your govt policy. We are here to talk about how this impacts our travel plans, not to get into debates with Americans. May I suggest, with as much kindness as I can muster, that you please go away.

So since this has gone soooooo off track from what I started, and the fact I am here now. I will ask the mids to close this. I am all for open discussions and will add to any that someone else opens up...but I dont want someone coming to this thread and then wondering how did Mrch break turn.
Thank you all.
