We just returned from a great trip to Florida with SW from Buffalo! The flight was great and we would highly recommend SWA.

The only problem is my little guy has a peanut allergy and they serve peanuts on board.

Unfortunately we will not be fly SWA again and will have to look for an alternative.

Does anyone know an airline that does not serve peanuts???

Thanks

See "Flying With a Peanut Allergy" at http://www.foodallergy.org/Advocacy/airlines.html

I haven't seen peanuts on American Airlines in years. I have seen other nuts served in first class -- usually mixed nuts served warm, without any peanuts in the mix. In coach, American routinely serves small bags of pretzels or corn chips.

I've also heard of cases where an airline caters a flight with alternate snacks for everyone on the flight, if a passenger notifies the airline ahead of time that someone has a peanut allergy.

I flew back from Chicago in Aug. on Southwest. I overheard a mother telling the gate agent about her son's peanut allergy. Later on the flight, they announced they would not be serving peanuts but pretzels today. Now that's service! I don't think any of the other passengers were even aware of the reason. They were just happy to get a snack.

Just tell the airline about the peanut allergy and they will serve something else. If anyone on the plane asks for peanuts, they will be told no - due to someone's allergy.

I see this quite often

My girldfriend is in this situation with her daughter and the problem for her isn't what the airline is serving because they are more than accomodating. The problem is that the airline cannot prevent passengers from bringing on snacks that contain peanuts. If someone next to her were to feed their child something containg peanuts my gf's daughter would require her epi pen and I'm pretty sure that after administering that she neds to be seen by medical personal within a certain time frame... not always possible if you are in the air.

When I fly Airtran, in the morning they serve Biscotti cookies and afternoon or evening they serve pretzels.

Jet Blue has a variety of choices of small, FREE snacks and I'm pretty sure NONE of them are or contain peanuts - although one or another could contain peanut products.

Disney Fanatic....I can actually speak with experience here. SWA is the only airline we fly and have done so at least 6 times with my peanut allergy DD(3). Here is how you go about flying SWA if you have a child with a peanut allergy.
---Frist, try and take the first flight in the morning, they don't serve peanuts until after 9:30am,
---second, if you are flying after 9:30am once you've made your online reservation call the airline and have them note the system on your reservation that your child is allergic to peanuts
---Third, when you get to the holding area tell the person working the desk you check in at at the gate an hour prior to departure so they can make sure they have other snacks, and also they on every flight I've taken with her made an announcement in the holding area that this will be a peanut free flight, if you have something containing peanuts please do not open on board. Feel free to get other food or we will give you extra snacks for your coorperation.
---And Last, ask if you can preboard with out the child...go on the plane and with a wipe, wipe down the handles, tray table, seat, etc.

I know that sounds like a lot...but for the price we get and how nice SWA is we will only fly them....it really isn't that hard, and we've never had a problem. PM me if you have any other questions.

What happens if someone does open their peanut snack onboard? I feel for the child who is allergic but would be pretty miffed if I wasn't told no peanut snacks once I was in the holding area. Last trip we got an Uncrustable at the resort for DD to eat on the plane. She doesn't eat anything else and I thought that would be a great snack for her. What do they do to the passengers that ignore such a request? Incidently we are having bagles this trip as DD's food group has expanded!

Lately, on my afternoon and evening flights, SW has been serving two snacks: bags of peanuts and little snack mix packs. They normally give one of each to everyone, but if you have a peanut allery situation and mention it to them, I imagine they could simply serve the snack mix alone. Most people wouldn't even notice, except people like me who fly waaaaaay too much.

I'm also curious to know what would happen. As we all know, not everyone follows instructions.

Thank you so much!!

These are all great suggestions.

This is such a great place for information

Thanks again

I think they would hand you and your family parachutes. Then they would have Mr. Peanut escort you to the emergency exit. :teeth: ;)

As far as making the announcement in the holding area, for us they have always done it early enough that someone could get something else in one of the shops by the holding area. We fly out of BWI (Baltimore) and there are plenty of snack shops and fast food places that is shouldn't be an issue. As far as if someone does open it, the FA would probably ask them to please put it away right away. I have also heard them say that if the instructions to not open anything with peanuts isn't followed it could result in having to take extra time out of your travel to make an emergency medical landing because of the reaction the person could have. I know that my DD will stop breathing. I do carry two epi pens which is enough to land the plane but we would have to land right away we wouldn't make it to our destination. I will tell you that because of how serious my DD peanut allergy is, she is covered under the American's with Disabilites Act. And just like any disability, most people help accomodate the problem. I also dose her up on Benadryl just so that she already has a blocker in her in case there would be any contact. It is very scary allergy. I'd much rather not have to deal with it. I just pray and hope everyone is understanding, I know as a mother I can't thank people enough who help and are accomodating, I really appreciate their kindness. It only stresses you out for the time of your flight, for mothers living with this everyday is scary and worrysome. Ok...tears...I get very emotional when I talk about it cause I almost lost her once to the reaction. (that was the first reaction when we found out she had the allergy, off of 1 peanut MM) :sad1:

I know on that show Airline SW dealt with a peanut allergy once. The family had made to sure to call ahead and have it dealt with then. They went as far as vacumming the aisle the child was sitting in as well as the one right behind it (I believe they put them in the first row). They also didn't serve the peanuts on board.

I wondered how they dealt w/ other passengers. It's nice to know they make an announcement. I would think most people would understand.
