Any advice on planning 11 months out

I was wondering if some of you could share some advice on planning a DVC trip 11 months out? This will be our family's first trip as a DVC member and I don't want to screw this up. We have BCV as our home resort and I don't know if there is anything other than reserving the room and date I should know. Is there a good planning guide or checklist out there that could walk me through it?

I'm interested in hearing of some of the can't miss or fringe benefits that I shouldn't pass up on. Thanks in advance.

My understanding is that the only benefit is having a room if you book at 11 months. It gives you priority at your home resort before it is opened up at seven months to everyone else. The room requests are not guaranteed and there are many threads on this topic. They dont assign rooms I think untill three days out and up to check in.

If you haven't already done so, find one of Caskbill's posts, click on the link in his signature, and download his DVC Planner software. Very cool, very useful, and very free.

Not really. You can list requests like "Non-smoking" on your reservation if you wish. Honestly, I wouldn't recommend making any additional requests like a view or specific location. Since this is your first stay, you lack any sort of frame of reference which taking advice from other members. Just take whatever room the resort assigns to you and use that as your opportunity to get the lay of the land. Then you'll have a better idea of what to request in the future.

There are some perks available to members, but the list changes often. A couple months before your trip you might want to log onto the DVC members-only website and check out the list. You should also receive a small "Pocket Perks" brochure when you check-in that lists the current member discounts.

You may also find that DVC offers special members-only events during your stay. For example, in April DVC members are getting a free preview of the new Soarin attraction at Epcot. Back in December DVC hosted weekly members-only gatherings just outside of the International Gateway to Epcot. These types of events are only scheduled a couple months in advance, so again just check before you leave and see if there is anything of note.

Good luck.

Hillbilly,

If you are staying for a week or more and plan on regularly visiting the Parks, you may want to purchase Annual Passes. There is a DVC discount available for purchasing them.

Good luck,

Chris

Do they still let you know if you definately got the dates you wanted though?

Oh yeah.

You call 11 months from your checkout date (at your home resort) - unless you are calling day by day. You can wait, too, and call 9 months or 323 days or whatever - as long as its at least 11 months out and MS is open. You state what your want - BCVs October 7-11, one bedroom. They look it up and book you in. You are set. You will definately have a one bedroom at BCVs for those days.

Then you add requests. Non-smoking? High Floor? Whatever turns your crank. THOSE are simply requests, and you may or may not get them, but they do let Disney know what you are looking for.

A week or so after your phone call, you will get a confirmation letter with information about travel insurance, etc.

I wouldn't worry about perks 11 months out - those change. Most of us don't use MS for airfare and car rental, but you can.

Then you try and be patient for the next eight months until you can make PSs.....

Wow, you're WAY ahead of me! I have 1.6...and I just downloaded it a week or so ago!

As tjkraz and crisi have pointed out, a lot of this stuff is not something you should worry about 11 months out, because it changes. But, especially if you are looking for a larger unit, you would proobably do well to make your reservations as soon as you can...provided your dates are well-set.

I'd spend much of the remainder of my micro-planning time over on the Theme Parks & Attractions Strategies board (you did know there were strategies, right?). There is a wealth of information over there on more topics and in more depth than any normal person would ever want to know.

One benefit which may be useful to you is the DVC discount at various restaurants, retailers, etc. It is generally 10%, sometimes more. The restaurant discount excludes alcoholic beverages.

There are two other dining discount packages, neither of which are currently available to DVC owners. However, they may be by the time you visit, or you may qualify some other way.

The Disney Dining Experience is available to annual pass holders and Florida residents (to make it up to us for our lousy winter weather here!). That costs $75 per year ($50 for AP holders), and entitles you to 20% discount on ALL food and beverage at participating restaurants (and there are a lot of them). It is good for up to ten people at a time, provided they are all on the same check, the DDE cardholder is paying the check, and the card is presented at the time of ordering. It also works if you want to hang out at Epcot knocking back a few beers. If you are getting annual passes, you should check this. Or, if you are even close to getting annual passes, you may want to check what the extra cost of one AP + DDE would be - you may find that it saves you a bunch of money. (There's no reason to get more than one DDE unless you're taking a whole tribe of people with you.)

The other is the MYW Meal Plan, currently only offered to guests at the regular Disney resorts - not DVC. I don't know all the particulars of this plan, but it is a big discount. There have been posts here from members who have been told this plan may be made available to DVC if and when Disney can get two computer systems to talk to each other. That remains to be seen, but it is something to check as you get closer to your trip.
