Hi all! I've worked as an Administrative Assistant (of sorts) for a number of years, and there is an Accounts Payable/Payroll Coordinator position open at another company that I'm looking into. I'm pretty good at Excel, do all of our finances at home, and own my own tutoring 'company' (do all of the finances there). Is there anything specific I need to know how to do before I interview for this job? I'm very good at crunching and keeping track of numbers...

Any advice would be great! :thumbsup2

Is there a job description available for the position, or at least more detail? I think it's possible you might need some prior A/P and P/R experience to be able to do that job.

Will there be someone to train you? Have you had experience in any accounting software other than spreadsheets (like Quickbooks)?

Payroll can be a little tricky - especially withholding and 941 returns and human resources issues. How big is the company?

Good luck!

I've been doing AP for about 10 years now, with 3 different companies. The job is pretty much the same all over so skills are transferrable.

Nothing is paid until someone higher up OK's it, but you have to keep track of things so nothing becomes overdue. there is a fair amount of entering invoices into the computer program your company uses, some spreadsheet work, etc.

the experience you already have should be great. I say go for it. It is not a real stressful job. there may be a day or two where it is really busy, but not usually 8 hrs a day, all week. :goodvibes

I went from Administration/Executive Assistant to A/P and had no problem with the transition.

How busy you are, will depend on the company, how many vendors they have and how often they run checks.

I worked for a housing builder in the height of the housing industry (before it went bust) and the 2 of us could not keep up with the invoices that came in on a regular basis. But don't let that discourage you. I enjoyed what I was doing until I was laid off -- housing BUST.
