What do you tell people when they hear you are going to WDW, and they ask, "Why again" or, "Don't you want to see OTHER parts of the world"?

For me the answer is simple - To me, it's utopia. I forget all of my troubles and only have fun. And about "seeing the world"... Yeah, sure! I do... just I want to do THIS more right NOW.

Putting this into words that other people can understand is another thing.

What do you tell people?

I don't know what to tell people because I don't "get" Disney either. It is a great place but there are other great places as well. I can't imagine spending EVERY vacation at Disney.

I just try to explain that it's a place where I can enjoy myself without the hassles of life. For a short time when I'm on Main Street I forget about my job, mortgage, etc. Plus, it's like going on a vacation where you don't worry about pickpockets, crime, etc. And, we enjoy it because if the attention to detail.

Most people just don't get it because they have in their heads that Disney = only for kids. They can't understand it, so I just let it be "to each their own."

What about people who think Disney = Evil Empire like my brother. I just laugh at him and tell he he's entitled to his opinion but until he has gone don't judge.

I don't feel the need to explain my vacation decisions to people (where ever I choose to go.)

Simple...

I answer to NOONE.:rotfl2:

I live in Florida now, so it doesn't happen often. In fact, usually the response is "take me with you"!

Not sure if Virginia will be different. But I don't care.

I'm like golfgal though--I like to travel to lots of places. Disney is more of a "getaway" to us though. I've done a couple of "extended stays" and even then--after about day 4 or so, the rest seemed unnecessary. So if we "vacation" there, it would only be 4 days about. Which is fine since we will be a family of six and my DVC is only the base point amount. In 3 years, we won't be able to afford a longer stay unless we add on points.

People like that have typically already predetermined that Disney is bad and won't listen to any alternative explanation. My wife had a friend that believed the Utilidors were used for underground nuclear testing because Oprah wasn't allowed to bring a camera crew through them and an exchange student we had hated Disney because her mom felt they symbolized the evils of capitalist America.

If they can't look beyond that and see that Disney is a target because of their success and observe the contributions the company has given society then they just won't change. Ignore them, it's like rationalizing with a brick wall.

I don't feel the need to explain to anyone why I choose to spend my money the way I do :confused3

But I've never been in the camp that thought WDW was the only vacation spot worth going to. We go on a regular basis because 1) we have family there and 2) it's dirt cheap for us but there IS a great big beautiful world out there that we intend to explore as well.

I agree with Magic Mom and Lisa Loves Pooh, I don't do explanations. No one else pays for my trips but me.

i have taken DD11 since she was 5 to WDW and we have been on 3 DCL cruises. We are gong again this year. WDW for Halloween-because we have never been during that time and it will be DD's last "legal" trick or treating.
We will also go on the Wonder-one last time in December as she is moving to the West coast.

However, I have taken DD other places, D.C., Hawaii. Next year we are planning a 7 day cruise to the Western Caribbean.

What gets me is, these are the same people that go to the beach (the same beach) each and every summer. DUH, does the beach change? Disney does. There's just no convincing some people.

My DSis, who has literally traveled around the world, (but only visited MK for one day years ago), always says that to me ... so here's what I did ... I said, go with me once to WDW, I'll show you the "World" and then you can let me know what you think ... so this past December, she and I went for a week and guess what? ... she can't WAIT to go back!!! :goodvibes ...

I just smile and feel sorry for them while thinking that's one less person who will be in my way getting to my favorite bench.

Everyone has different tastes. As I grew older I no longer feel the need to explain my likes and dislikes to anyone and you should, too.

I don't go to Disney, I'm a Universal person myself. I've also been on a Disney board for 10 years. I could care less what people feel about my preferences as I don't care about theres. There comes a time that everyone finally reaches the point that we do what makes us and our family happy and other people's preferences are just that, OTHER people's preferences.

"Don't knock till you've tried it." That's what I tell people when they say "Again!".

To me it's the one place that I can go and forget about the real world. I savor and enjoy every moment of it.

Some of my favorite moments are watching people experience DW for the first time. I wonder if I responded like they do, with joy and excitement the first time I went. But every time is like the first time because I always find new things to do and see.

Disney World is my vacation from reality, and I am oh so grateful it is there for me when I need it.

I just tell them it's my money and my vacation and I'll go where I want to. While there are places in this country we'd like to see someday, right now, WDW vacations make us all happy and that's all that counts! Besides, when I was a kid, I'd never been away on vacation until I turned 15! We just plain didn't have the money for our family to travel. I think I turned out ok anyways! :lmao: So at least my DS's are ahead of where I was!

There are two types of people - those who "get" Disney, and those who don't. You will probably never get those who don't get it to understand why you love it so much. So when those people say "again?" I just say "yep" and leave it at that.

This is exactly how I feel. On bad days, I always think, "Oh, what I wouldn't give to be at Epcot right now!"

We rarely fly, so for our family, it is a great getaway that is driving distance. We can stay at the cozy, woodsy WL or the Beachy BC. We can take our DD to do the parks and act like big kids ourselves, or we can let her have fun at a kid's club while DH and I enjoy an upscale dinner and cocktails. We can stroll through the World Showcase and admire the shops, performers, etc or lay by the pool at our resort. There are SO many dining options, SO many resorts to choose from. There are so many DIFFERENT vacations to be had at Disney.

oh, ETA that I think many people just think about the parks when they hear "Disney" and honestly, the parks are secondary for me! We are going in May with no park passes...just hanging by the AKV pool for a few days!!

Oh I have gotten the "Don't you want to see the world" response. I always act really excited and say "Wow do I! Are you offering to pay for it!" They say no and I then explain that when they do pay they can pick where I go. Until then I go where I am happy!

It's one of those things they either get or don't. And that's okay. I don't "get" Las Vegas or Nascar. :rotfl2: But I wouldn't hold it against anyone. ;)
