We are traveling with 2 boys 7 & 4 and don't want to book any excursions, kind of see how everything goes.

My question is, other than shopping, are there any beaches (nice & safe) walkable from the piers in Cozumel and Grand Cayman?

We really don't want to take a cab anywhere, just want to get off the ship and explore for a while.

Any recommendations?

I don't think there are any beaches within walking distance from either of these ports. Are you concerned about safety in the taxis? We (me, DH, DD6 and baby) took taxis at both of these ports. The rates are reasonable. In Cozumel we took a taxi to Chankanaab $10 each way plus park admission-- $12/ adult and $6/child. Nice, clean park and it is the same place as the DCL Dolphin excursions. The beach has "tiki" stlye umbrellas and chairs. It is a rocky beach, great for snorkeling. In Cayman we went to "Sea Grapes" on 7 mile beach. Taxi was $4/adult, our driver didn't charge for children. Sea Grapes charges for chair and umbrellas. We rented one chair and one umbrella for $15 and it included a bottle of Aquafina water. We had to have the umbrella because of the baby, but you could use this beach for free without the chair/umbrella rental. I also like to have a place to park my stuff. We felt very safe at both of these ports. Feel free to ask any other questions. I hope this helps.

I agree that Cayman beaches are only a short cab ride away. The cabs are like a minibus and they are everywhere. There is shopping and food close to the pier, but no real beach to speak of. There is a snorkeling area close by, but no sand to hang out on. The beach is great there and the kids would love it, but you will need to take a cab. Good luck.
