Another use year ?

We are hoping to buy a resale for VWL within the next month or so.
We typically vacation in January for the Marathon.
My question is this: With a December use year, am I not able to make a reservation until December when I actually 'get' the points or can I make a ressy before then?

use year is completely, completely unrelated to when you can call and book. if you own at WL, you can call 11 months out to book at WL, regardless of use year month.

ideally, you would want a use year month that is right before you typically travel - so an oct or dec UY if you primarily travel in dec or jan.

use year only tells you 1) when your pts can be used (i.e. oct 2009 UY pts can reserve stays between oct 1, 2009 and sept 30, 2010 unless you bank them into 2010) and 2) when you can bank (8 months after the start of your UY). that is all.

You do not have to have the points when you MAKE the reservation; you only need to have the points at the time the reservation STARTS. For example, let us assume as of today (7/14/2009) you still have 160 points in your December '08 use year, and you'll get another 160 points in December 2009. If you wanted to make a reservation for January 2010 that costs 200 points, you could make that reservation today. You could bank 160 '08 points and apply them and 40 points from '09 to make the reservation. If this reservation was at your home resort, you could have made the reservation as early as February '09 at the 11-month window.

Remember that the banking window for a December UY closes as of July 31st. If you need to bank points into next UY, you'll need to do it soon!

Points don't "deposit" when your use year starts, they are already there. For example, I have an April use year and if I look at my account online, it shows points for April 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012. If I wanted to make a reservation today for June 2010 at my home resort, I could use 2010 points as current (because the date of stay is in my 2010 use year) and borrow 2011 (also could use 2009 banked).
