I've been checking online to see prices for the category 6 vrs. category 11 in order to upgrade at the port. There seems to be no cabins available in the category 6 so does that mean my chance of an upgrade at the port is slim?

Probably so. Often times there are NOT any higher cabin types available so you may not be able to check for upgrades. but you can always try! :)

I don't want this to come off wrong or that I am a jerk or something.( I'm really not :))

I am always happy to hear when someone gets an upgrade whether it be comlimentary or at a big discount. It seems like such a magical start to a wonderful vacation!! It always delights me to hear it especially when it is a total surprise to someone!

That said however it seems like there is a pattern of late with people booking the least expensive cabin and then wanting/hoping/expecting to get an upgrade-either complementary or at a huge discount and being dissapointed if that does not happen.

We love our veranda, wouldn't sail without one but I pay for it. I pay three times as much in some cases as others to insure that I get my veranda. I don't try to get around the system and don't feel entitled to anything but what I pay for. I save money all year so that I can afford to vacation the way I want on our various trips, don't go out to dinner much, don't go to the movies, make many small sacrifices and less glamourous choices so I can be insured to have the trip of my dreams. That is well worth it to me.
When my friends ask me to go away for the weekend, I say "no thanks" because I always am focused on what is really important to me. My family vacations!

I would encourage anyone who desires a veranda to save their money (it will be well spent) and just book one from the start!

I've actually been hoping that I could get an upgrade at the port too! When I booked our cruise about a year ago, I didn't even know about the DIS boards. I just called up DCL and booked a cat 9 because we wanted a window but didn't think we would be use a verandah very often. Since reading all the information on this board, I've decided that I would love a verandah (duh). I actually called DCL to see if I could upgrade about 2 weeks ago (our cruise is 3/22) but because we need a room that sleeps 4 there are no rooms available - the cruise is almost full. So at least I know that my chances at the port are next to nil, but of course I will ask anyway;) We're going to book our next cruise while we are on board (I learned about the $200 credit here!) and you bet it will be a verandah room!:p

Being a first time cruiser, I didn't even know what an upgrade was! Yes, I will try at the port, but won't be disappointed if it doesn't happen. How can you be disappointed on a cruise????? The whole experience will be awesome!!

I felt like I won the lottery when I got on the ship and walked in to a 2 bedroom suite. In fact, I went to the room I was supposed to have (a mini suite) and the key didn't work. It was only then that my wife told me she was give a different cabin number when she cheked the bags at the GF. When we opened the door to the new cabin, we found a 2 bedroom suite with a large living room that we could sit in and the living room did not need to double as a bedroom. My 15 yo boy got his own bedroom that he could junk up just like at home, without annoying his stepmom.

Also the veranda was three times as long as a single room balcony. We were suprised and elated at the upgrade. It got the trip off to a good start and turned around the bad start when my wife and I got intop a fight over the fact that she checked all our carry on bags and then told me it was my fault.

rkamer- THAT is the type of story I LOVE!!! You were not expecting an upgrade-and got one as a surprise! How wonderful!!!

I only said I hate it when people book the cheapest and then expect an upgrade and are dissapointed when they don'tget one.

I still believe in santa and think it's great when he shows up unexpectedly-but I don't sit by the fireplace in june ;)

Does anyone know how full the Magic typically is in January? And, what would be the upgrade price from an 11 to a 5 or 6 on the 7 night? Thanks. ;)
