I was reading about the floods. ...how bad is the flooding in your town? I know it won't effect your home, thank goodness! but will it cause damage to school/ work?
Unless it floods really, really bad most of the commercial district should be ok. We have quite a few neighborhoods that are in lower lying areas. Luckily we had a flood in '96 and it was a giant wake up call...nearly everyone living downtown has flood insurance. My work is ok, quite a way up from the Columbia River, up a bit of a sloping hill, so no a problem there.
I did go outside when I got home and made sure that our ditches and culverts were cleared out. If the creek gets way to high, then it will go down our ditch. If the ditch gets clogged then it could overflow into the neighbors house and flood her. She has a daylight basement, so I try to make sure things don't overflow up here.
We have a giant concrete seawall in our town. There are a few missing pieces where the roads go, but my brother said this morning they were told to get all the pieces ready to be put in. That protects a lot of the older downtown area and schools, but most of the newer neighborhoods are on the opposite side.
Some of the kids might not be going to school for a while. Our school district goes about 40 miles up the Lewis River. I guess the state highway is washed out in 4 different places from milepost 30 on up.
So far this evening the rain seems to have subsided. It really hasn't rained much for the last 4 hours or so. I-5 is closed in Centralia (halfway between Portland and Seattle).
