I have a pair of Cardys and a pair of Argyles and neither are as warm as my Classics. The crochet styles only have a sheepskin innersole so the whole interior of the boot isn't covered in it like the Classic style.
I have both the Cardy and the classics. I would not advise wearing the Cardy style in the rain/snow as they are essentially a cotton/sweater material and while that may keep you warm...it most certainly wont keep you dry. Im not sure if a protectant would help.
The classics are slightly more forgiving, however they are suede and need proper care and protection in order to remain intact and looking their best. My dd was nice enough to wear mine sledding when there was 3 inches of snow....dragging her feet on the pavement so the toes are all frayed.
