Another tipping question...

I know I've read this info elsewhere, but I forgot to write it down.
What is recommended tip for room service? Also porters who take our luggage at terminal ?
I'm keeping a list because my memory is not what it used to be.

I don't know about roomservice, but the porters should be tipped $ 1 per piece of luggage.

We base our room service tip on the amount of food ordered, starting at $2 and working our way up from there.

Although all tipping is up to your discretion (except for the automatic 15% gratuity for drinks), there are no "guidelines" or "suggestions" for room service tipping. My personal <i><b>suggestions</b></i> are as follows:

$2 minimum.
$1 for each additional person receiving service.
$1 if all you're getting is coffee or tea.

So you'll want to start saving single dollar bills prior to your cruise.

The other place where cash tipping is appropriate is the porters for curbside checkin at the beginning of the cruise and hauling your luggage through customs and out to your car or bus at the end of the cruise. These guys work hard and save you a lot of labor. Tip them generously (at least $1/bag).

We just returned from the 7 day Magic eastern cruise and at the disembarkation talk given by the cruise director, he stated that the porters who help you through customs are NOT DCL employees and expect $1.50 per bag. Trust me...it's worth every penny! We had 7 people, 8 bags and two wine boxes and they took care of getting it all through customs plus loaded it into our rental van.

$5 and $10 bills are handy too. Seriously, when our family of 4 checked in with 6 bags -- and received very pleasant service from the curbside porter -- it seemed that a $10 bill was an appropriate tip for her.

I had a lot of singles ready for room service, but we were never hungry enough to order from room service.

Werner Weiss, that is so true! My MIL brought so many dollar bills that by the end of the trip she was bribing the kids to do things for her so she could pay them and get rid of them all! We tipped the porter on the way in $15 and on the way out $18. A "tip" I got from this board was to get a lot of $2 bills for room service and people will remember you. I waited too late to get them because your bank will have to order them and it takes ten days to two weeks.

If you are planning on doing the High Tea at Palo on the 7 day you may want to bring some bills along for a tip. There is no charge for Palo - therefore no slip to sign and add a gratuity to. I have heard many people saying they wished they would have brought some cash along to tip for the excellent High Tea service.

I thought I read that the Palo Cover charge was for the tip? Perhaps I'm mistaken. Anyone know for sure? Diana

Diana..there is no charge for the High tea...dinner at Palo runs $5 a person and brunch $10 a person.

However, while technically you're correct, the service you receive at Palo is worth well beyond that paltry amount!
