I have a flight booked with SWA (DING special). On the leg down, we are leaving much later than I had wanted, plus there is a layover. We would also have to depart a day earlier than I had originally planned on the return flight. I tried all possible scenarios and this is the one that worked best for us. I can live with this if I have to. My question is this- should I get another DING and could get what I had originally wanted, could I cancel the flights I have now, get a credit, and then re-book without incurring a penalty? Thanks for any and all help!

Yes you can easily cancel your flight, get credit and rebook with the new Ding fare if the seats are still available. There is never any penalty.

Thanks! I thought so- just had to be sure. :)

There is a penalty. The DING fares are non-refundable. You will have a rebooking fee and have to pay any fare difference.

SW doesn't have a change fee, penalty or a rebooking fee. The only thing you pay is the fare difference. If the fare is lower you'll get a credit.

I wish people wouldn't post unless they're sure of the answer.

There are no penalties with SWA. We have changed and/or canceled and rebooked flights--including DING fares and used my credits to book other flights. The flights we changed to were all lower and we used our credit with SWA on other flights.

We change ours all the time with no penalty, too. That's one of Southwest's biggest advantages.

I'm just curious as this is the first time we'll be flying Southwest.

I'm watching for lower fares and if this does happen, how do I go about switching them?

Do I cancel first and then rebook?

I mean, isn't that a chance to be taking canceling the one flight and then rebooking if the seats are available? Is there an easy way to do this?

Thanks

Yes, you have to cancel first, then re-book using the credit reservation number you get from cancelling to make the new reservation. Naturally, you have to check availability for the number of seats in your group is available before you cancel. The whole process only takes a couple of minutes so the availability should still be there.

Actually..if you have your confirmation code...you can book the new flight/fare and when you get to the payment page you can just click on the "Apply Ticketless Travel Funds" tab and enter your confirmation code from the reservation you no longer want and the other info it asks for and it will rebook you and cancel out the other ones at the same time. At least it worked that way for me last week.

Another question on this topic...... what if they now offer a promotional fare that is lower than the one I booked for the day I am departing and returning but...the flights are booked and unavailable. I hope this makes sense...can I get a credit for the lower fair??

I already booked the flights but now that day the fare is cheaper but the flights have no availablity. Does this make sense???

Thanks!
