Another SNAKE thread!

Hi all!

I've been meaning to post this since we returned from our Halloween trip. Anyway, I have always enjoyed and been freaked out over the snake threads here on the Disboards. This year we went prepared and I had repeatedly warned my kids to stay out of the landscaping and stuff, but really not expecting seeing any. But lo and behold, we encountered two! The first was on a sidewalk outside of the Japanese pavilion in Epcot. It was tiny and at first we thought it was a worm. The second was dead and was on the pathway from BWV to Epcot. It had obviously been run over by something earlier that morning. So, moral of this story is, beware--they are there and keep your eyes peeled!

A snake hunt... Oh how fun!!! We don't have snakes in Hawaii, so I'm going to try and look for some next time I'm in WDW.

The only places I've ever seen snakes are at BCV and Fort Wilderness. When we were at OKW once, while we didn't see any snakes, one night we came back to our villa and a group of about 8-10 people were standing in a circle outside. Finally the group broke up, and I over heard one say to another "So what kind of snake do you think that was?" That was too close for me!

That's interesting about Hawaii not having snakes. It didn't used to hold any appeal to me to go there, but with that definite positive, I might reconsider!

LOL, well the problem with that is that there are also a lot of rodents and bugs! Oh, and ferrel cats!

hahah yea, we get out share of rodents and bugs.... Also mongoose. Except Kauai, no mongoose on Kauai, but they have chickens running wild all over the place!

A snake hunt... Oh how fun!!! We don't have snakes in Hawaii, so I'm going to try and look for some next time I'm in WDW.

Don't hunt to hard some bite.

Probably should have just said more "aware"--Last year a little boy was bitten by a poisonous snake on property. We made sure our kids didn't get too close to the landscaping this year.

We saw a snake one time at Blizzard Beach in the underbrush along the side of the lazy river.

Over the years have seen snakes at:
OKW - Black Racer/Indigo
VWL - Ring Neck, that is the snake in the OP's first picture
VB - Could not tell what it was, too far away
SSR - Grass snake
DTD/Pleasure Island - Black Racer/Indigo
none appeared to be deadly.
NOTE: Have seen a small gator in the creek between OKW and DTD, a couple of years ago.

We had a late ADR at Rose & Crown (Epcot) on our most recent vacation (just ended last Saturday Dec. 11) to enjoy a leisurely dinner followed by Illuminations. We even waited a few extra minutes to be seated outside to have a fantastic view of Illuminations from the Terrace.

Right at the conclusion of the 1st quiet 'act' of Illuminations we heard a commotion at the table adjacent to us, and I looked down and sure enough SNAKE!

The panic that ensued was NEARLY as bad as what I thought it would be, people pretty much just moved out of its way. But one of the servers ran to get a broom - to which one of the guests said "I don't know what good that's going to do!"

It was over 2.5 feet long and my wife claims that it was roughly the diameter of a ping pong ball - but I dispute that it wasn't QUITE that large.

But it definitely wasn't a 'tiny' snake!

We have seen all sorts of wildlife at WDW over the last few years!

Our favorite so far has definitely been the Otters in the river at Old Key West - they were so much fun to watch! They rolled and tumbled and chased each other - it really was magical to watch! Especially since I think Otters are just so cute to begin with! HAHA

I love to see how many lizards we can spot on a walk of any distance. I have seen upwards of 50 on the walk from Hollywood Studios to the Boardwalk - I'm sure there were more that we didn't see!

Also, cool about the otters! I would love to see them.

We are also lizard counters. Our favorite spot to find/count them is the curb with the heavy vegetation leading into Animal Kingdom. The lizards are numerous, sunning themselves on the curb. We have also counted over 50--however, after I heard about the little boy who was bitten last year, I thought of this place. My kids would get so close to the shrubs and stuff. A great place for the snakes to hide!

We've spent about a bazillion days at WDW and have never seen a snake. I guess I'm not looking close enough! I think I will just keep on doing what I'm doing! It works out fine for me!

We were at Port Orleans prior to joinng DVC and saw a very large rattle snake sunning himself on the bridge going from the Magnolia Section over to the main pool. I have never seen so many CMs trying to catch one snake in my life. They never did get it but the next few times we crossed the bridge we paid extra attention to what had decided to lay in the sun and get warm. The scarey part is how close it was to the pool and all the vegatation surrounding it. From that point forward we never get in an area around a pool that is secluded and surrounded by vegatation. One other place to think about is at the Jambo hot tubs and the plants that are right against the back of the seats.

I've seen snakes at least 3 times at OKW. The first time a black snake was swimming in the main pool, then a black snake was on a sidewalk outside our villa, and the 3rd time a black snake slithered across my foot while I was sitting at the South Point community pool near some bushes.

And here at home in TX I was bitten by a rattlesnake a few years ago. I was in ICU for several days.
