Another Rent/Trade heads-up - Potential Renters, PLEASE read.

Thanks for taking the extra time to explain the 30 day rule.

I understand the rule, but just not the reasoning behind it, is there a reason?

I think the reason is some people would make alot of reservations for the most desired times at Disney and then rent them out at 11 months out or whatever and think they are just trying to cut down on that. Just by allowing you to post one in the 30 day mark means that someone really is not able to use their reservation for whatever reason and dont want the points to go into holding.

Now I maybe totally wrong with this assumption but thats how I see it anyway;)

We do our best ... but that's why it's so important for renters to use due diligence and know as much as possible about whom they are dealing with before sending any money.

Caveat Emptor.

I haven't rented out my points or tried renting from others yet, but It's nice to know there are people out there like yourself helping us make good sound decisions. Thanks for all of your help and advice.

I have read the 'rental primer' but I really don't know how to research who I would be renting from.

I am considering renting points for this June/July (I somehow doubt there is any availablility for my dates though) but I'm really nervous about doing it. I'm not finacially in a position to lose a dime.

Any help would be appreciated.:)

As long as members cancel at least 31 days in advance, the points are returned to their account without penalty. The DIS does not want to support speculative renting (which is usually defined as "make a reservation first - usually for a popular time, and then try to rent it").

While I'm sure there are good arguments in some situations for allowing confirmed reservations to be advertised more than 30 days in advance, I'd sure hate to be the one who had to decide who was "worthy" and who was not. Better to have a rule that applies equally to all. If the points from a canceled reservation are returned to the owner's account without penalty, the owner can find a renter and then make a new reservation based on that renter's needs / wants. There are no time restrictions on that type of renting - find a renter, then make the reservation.

Again, those who want to rent a confirmed reservation made for a stay more than 30 days in advance may certainly do so. They just can't use the DIS to find their customers.

June and July could be very difficult this close. You might not find anything available. You really need to work with a member closer to 11 months out to make sure you get something. Seven months out would be the least I would consider just because making those DVC reservations is getting tougher and tougher as more members join.

Sounds like agood enough reason

The person in question has still been registering new usernames. None of these new usernames can send a PM, but they can send an email to anyone who has an email in their profile.

Please be extra cautious if contacted by someone who won't correspond thru the DIS - either conducting "business" by posting on the Rent/Trade Board or by PM. In this case, it appears that the individual involved is not posting at all - they have registered so they read posts on the Rent/Trade Board and then contact potential renters/victims by email rather than make any contact thru the boards.

Caveat Emptor.

I got scared reading this. I have sent people messages where I saw that at one point they were interested in Harborside units b/c I have one that I'm trying to rent/trade into DVC. I am definitely not trying to scam anyone - I'm a professional woman with a family. I apologize if I may have offended anyone. I wasnt trying to. Someone at TUG recommended I look on Disboards to find someone for a trade.

I've gotten some great advice on disboards and dont want to be "blacklisted".

Doc:

If this person is a problem -- and, I believe that registering under several aliases is not allowed here either, right? -- does the software carry a feature to block an IP address?

If an IP address is locked out, that person cannot create several accounts, at least not from the system they may normally use.

Just a thought.

I was wondering about that too. I know my DH used to have a user name here too, but he can't sign up with it anymore, and I always assumed it was because it was the same IP address.

Doc, is blocking an IP possible? If so, it might be a way to stop an unscrupulous person like that, but I guess the watchword for those who rent should be even stronger to make sure renters have a significant number of board posts.

A couple weeks ago we saw someone on the boards here who was obviously just trying to build posts by posting things like "I agree", "Good idea", etc. I was pretty sure the reason was to get to the point to be able to post PMs. Maybe the rent trade board should have a minimum posting limit for people to participate. I mean for both renters and rentees. A minimum post count of say 100 might help out. It would give folks a chance to get to know the person a bit by checking old posts. Of course, some of the folks over there have that and they are all replies to rental requests!:rotfl:

I agree.... oops! ;)

I just wanted to say thank you to all who have posted such good advice. I do read the boards a lot, but don't post very often. I am a new DVC owner (will go home for the first time in August!) and in no way ready or willing to rent points at this time, but it is something I am thinking about for the future. It is great to have you all here as a resource~!

I've been in DVC for 6 years, but only on these boards for 1+. Last year, I had 24 points left over that I couldn't use, and posted on the rent/trade. It all worked out fine, found a solid renter, talked in person, mailed info, etc. all because of the great advice here on both our parts. I do feel bad, though, that we're coming up with ideas like "over 100 posts" to be more cautious, because sometimes newbies are honest - but they're just discovering these boards. Again, though - follow the advice on the stickies, and CYW (Cover Your Wallet);)

A lot of posts in no way assures honesty nor does the length of time on this forum.

I don't know, I tend to disagree. If you research the posts the person has made, you get to know a little about the person. I think that the moderator will tell you that there are very very few problems with DVC owners on this board renting points to others.

That's generally true, but if there are a lot of posts on any of the DIS forums, it is easy to look at those posts and get a feel for what kind of person you are dealing with.

Yes, we aren't saying those with few posts are dishonest. But if I were renting points from someone, I would be looking for someone with longevity on this board and the number of posts. I had someone not trust me to rent my points, and ok, it was her loss. But I can't imagine not trusting someone with the history I have on this board, the messages I have left and the fact that I list I live near Hershey Pa and there is my family in photos for all the world to see....

When I rented my points out, I had some wonderful renters with very few posts. But from the owner's point, as long as I get my money, it doesn't matter how many posts someone has....
