My DS has been nagging DH and I about him being able to walk to and from school by himself. He's a pretty responsible kid, but very friendly and talkative. Well after reading about two kidnapping attempts of a 13 year old boy and 11 year old girl on Tuesday in our town at a couple shopping areas, the day when he can do that has been postponed indefinitely.

His teacher talked to the class about it earlier today, so when I spoke with him after picking him up from afterschool care, he had all the right answers as to what to do if that should ever happen to him.

I know this takes place in other cities, but it's scary when it's in yours. I'm going back to being a very overprotective mom, that's for sure.

Not at 10 mine won't be walking home from anyplace! A girl at work is having a problem because next year her daughter starts Jr high and thats 6th grade so her daughter is 10 then goign to be 11 in a month after school starts and they don't have any after school programs once they hit Jr high school...she she is goign ot have to start working nights and her husband working days so there is someone home when school ends since they are not ready for her to get off the bus and sit in an empty house for 2-3 hours until someone gets home.

That's good to know that I'm not the only one that doesn't think a 10 year old should be walking without a parent. Since my son was held back a couple of years ago, we don't have to worry about what to do when he's in middle school as he will be entering fifth grade next school year.

Before hearing about these attempts, it amazed me when I would drop off my son at school, to see all of the kids going to school alone.

Oh by the way, the number has increased - some reports said three attempts of four kids and others four attempts of five kids. It doesn't really matter, any number is too many for me.

Oh I love small town living, my 10 year olds walk home all the time, but we only live 5 houses from the school. They can ride their bikes to friends' houses, etc, too. Would I let them do that in SanFrancisco, NO WAY IN HECK!

Sorry I didn't respond sooner. I have been busy with our local Little League.

We actually live in a little city named Alameda. It's connected to Oakland by four bridges and two tunnels. It's nice and quiet usually.
