Another (non DCL) guest overboard

Carnival didn't do anything wrong. Someone was reported missing, they conducted a search, notified the Coast Guard and reviewed the tapes which is what told the story. The only ones who did something wrong are the woman who stupidly sat on a railing in the middle of the night on a ship in the ocean, and possibly the group she was travelling with to not have each other's backs whatsoever and not report her missing for all that time. Possibly another unknown person if there was foul play. But not Carnival. They are a vacation company, not babysitters for grown adults.

I'm guessing it was intentional suicide. Why was she alone at 2am sitting on a balcony railing? Did she drink too much and then said "to hell with it" and let herself fall off? Did she tell her friends earlier that night that she would be "sleeping in" so they wouldn't look for her? I've traveled with groups many times, and we always met for breakfast or would be in touch to plan our day.
Just speculation of course, but very sad for those she left behind, and sad for her if she was going through depression and thought this was her only way out.

at this time ... from the stories I've seen ....

- person is reported as missing at noon .... nothing mentions what was last time anyone says they saw her

- ship begins a ship search ... this takes time .... and also begins to review tapes form the MANY MANY cameras today's cruise ships have.

- ship determines person IS missing

- tape review EVENTUALLY sees the incident which would have occurred 10 hours b4 the first report .....

- tape shows person was sitting on the rail ( a HUGE HUGE no no for any sailor) and falls backward at 2 AM

I've done these searches, overseen similar cases and been investigating officer in some others ....

Questions I'd have high on my list ....

2 AM on deck ..... ALONE????

Not noticed missing until noon?????
If she had her own room. Why would anybody notice she's missing. It does say she was traveling with friends not her family.

Also, so did she not have a roommate? I mean is it typical for solo cruisers travelling in a party of girls weekend - is it typical for them to get their own rooms? With DCL I think the cost is too high that usually girls only trips, girls pair up together right? Why didn't her roommate report anything earlier than noon? Or perhaps it's feasible that solo cruising is actually affordable on other cruise lines, and therefore more common on other cruises besides DCL (asking as I have no experience on other cruise lines)

I believe I read this was a "girls trip"

pay for a single cabin is possible but unlikely

roomie was 'asleep' and did not notice until noon . . . there are many possible story lines to this idea ....

+++++

jumping back .. someone mentioned that DCL ships has a 'man overboard detection system'

first I've heard of this ... I'm curious .... would the person care to expand?

I mean, I worked "the industry" for over 30 years and I'm not aware of a viable system .... altho "we" tried a few offerings while I was still active.

Some of these short Carnival cruises are incredibly cheap. You could probably book a verandah cabin for under 1k.

Good to know, thanks. Also I suppose her roommate could have been hungover and slept in until noon or so. Sad all around.

Capt, if you look at the thread on this topic on the Carnival Board on Cruise Critic, there's a lot of discussion about these MOB systems.

lots of discussion

and as one who WORKED THIS PROBLEM

mentioned a VIABLE system .......

"we" eventually had anyone working in a 'possible to get dumped' situation wear a special device .... it activates if the person falls in ... and it WORKS.

Do you think ya can get every passenger to wear one?

Her husband is a very sucessful thoroughbred trainer. He led the nation in wins last year over 100. I doubt cost would be any factor for her when it came to booking a cruise.

I agree. If she was not with friends hanging out drinking and talking, there would be no other reason for climbing and sitting on a railing alone... other than to "tempt fate." I mean she was not a child. Surely she knew that you don't go on a balcony railing. Very sad that she had children she has left behind.

One thing is for sure too much drinking and a cruise ship do not mix well!

Also the movie Titantic did much damage I wonder how many people when they have a few drinks too many in them decide to reinact that moment they are the king of the world!

I'm only speculating, but she was not traveling with her family, she was traveling with a group. Perhaps they all did their own thing in the mornings, and then met up for lunch to plan the rest of the day? At that point, they noticed she didn't show. I think that's totally plausible.

Sayhello
That or if the group tended to party at night and she had her own room they could have assumed she just slept in.

I mean I thought about this timeline a bit last night. DH sometimes gets hungry late at night. I tend to just go to sleep. There were a few nights he left at like 10:30 and went up on deck got a pizza and drank a few beers. I was half asleep when he left and never heard him come back in.

Had something happened to him I my have noticed at like 3 or 4 AM if I rolled over and realized he wasn't there, but on a girls weekend they would be sleeping in separate beds. So I probably wouldn't notice until 6 when I got up.

Now thinking about college and this being a roomate instead of my husband, honestly if my roommate was asleep and I went to get up and shower I often wouldn't even turn on a light to not wake her and just sneak out. So if she wasn't there and especially if her bed wasn't made I might not notice she wasn't in the room until I got out of the shower and decided to turn on the light. By this point it could be 7 AM.

Now if I partied shift this whole thing back several hours, I left her at 1 AM to go to bed after drinking myself for a while. Sleeping until 10 and then assuming she may have gotten up before me and gone to breakfast to not realize she was gone until noon wouldn't be totally unreasonable.

I mean my first thought of a adult friend not being in the room wouldn't be to notify security.
