Another New York City thread, I need some help!

Not sure if you're aware of this little tidbit but many of the libraries on Long Island have free passes to NYC museums and educational attractions like the Intrepid. Check out your local library website and see what they have --- a nice way to save some money!

I always forget about that! I just looked at our library's web site and the Museum of Modern Art, Guggenheim and the Intrepid, plus a few here on LI are on their list. We are planning on going to the Intrepid with the kids, so that saves a nice chunk of change . Thanks for reminding me to check the library.

I talked to DH and he said that he will probably fall sleep during Newsies , so I think we will be getting Spiderman tickets. I checked Broadwaybox tickets and they have 4 seats on the first 2 rows behind the stage. So, my question is would you ever get tickets that close to the stage?

It is far more likely that someone would fall asleep during Spiderman than Newsies.

I absolutely agree. For me, a Broadway show should not be about a super hero!! He has seen Phantom of the Opera and really enjoyed it. He has also seen many local plays and musicals and I have never seen him sleep, so I am not sure why he said that he will fall sleep!
Oh, well if we are paying over $450 for a 2-hour show, the whole family should agree on a show, otherwise, we are not going! We also get many Broadway shows touring and coming to Denver (eg, Wicked, Jersey boys, Phantom of the Opera, Mary Poppins), so if we don't get to see a show, that's fine.

So how exactly does this work? I want to take my kids next week (dd11, dd8) and we really just want to see a few specific exhibits in the Egyptian Wing (not special exhibits--just things she studied in school this year). We will likely only be there an hour or so. I've not been there since I was a student at Columbia and it was free with my school ID then. Do I just walk up and say "Here's my donation for the three of us?"

And for what it's worth, I usually pay a dollar or two per person to get in to both museums. In fact, I don't know anyone who pays more than that, so don't feel funny handing over only a few dollars to get in.

Just a thought since you live somewhere that gets touring shows often. Newsies will tour. It may not be this season or next but it will go on your at some point. You'll get a similar experience to the Broadway show just in larger houses. On the other hand Spiderman will most likely never tour. If it does it will be nothing like the Broadway version. They actually rebuilt the Foxwoods simply for Spider-Man so that it can support the pull-ups and actors above the audience. Not many touring venues could safely support that. So if it is a debate of what can I potentially see at home vs what will never be at home I'd say go see Spider-Man.

one suggestion is you may not be able to see everything in most of the big museums like the MET. comeiup with a touring plan like WDW. pick a few sections and the order you will see them in.

i had a membership to the MET for 2 years, gave it up last year b/c the boyfriend gets in with a corporate membership.

my favorites are:

the new American wing, I love how open it is and the light in there at dusk on the statues is almost magical.
19th and early 20th century European art.
Medieval art, there is also a section of body armor close by.
not huge into Egyptian art but the Temple of Dendur is amazing. i typically come in through Egyptian art , pass by here, and then head back to the American wing.
Asian Art is really relaxing and typically less busy than other sections.

when open the roof is fun and you get a view of the park.

Punk Chaos is great, and small so you can get thru quick, but it has adult content. it also may have a line, i went on a private tour so i have no idea if it has attracted a line yet.

It's free, there's not much to see but you can take your picture next to the ESB sign and stuff

OMG I saw Peter and the Starcatcher last week--I LOVED IT!! We are going to get tickets at TKTS next time we are in the city to see it again. I never laughed so much at a show as I did at that one!!!

Did you like Newsies? I've seen all of the other Disney shows, Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid, Lion King, Aida, Mary Poppins and Disney Visa kept sending emails about Newsies but somehow it didn't strike me.

Loved Newsies- didn't care for Mary Poppins- I actually fell asleep during Mary Poppins LOL!!

Some more questions:
Would you eat lunch or dinner at Serendipity 3 or just dessert? Samantha Brown ate some frozen hot chocolate in her Christmas in NYC Great Weekends episode. The food at Serendipity is ok, but, the dessert is great. Still like Max Brenner for this though - much, much better!


How long is the wait for Staten Island Ferry? Really depends on the day and how many people are touring.


Also, we will be using Amtrak to go to Washington DC. Do they provide internet access to passengers? DDs would like to use their IPads. Yes, I believe they do provide wireless.

In Washington DC, how far away is Udvar-Hazy Center? Would you get a cab to visit and how much would that cost? I know DC pretty well, but, I am not familiar with Chantilly, VA. Probably about 30 minutes away (expensive cab ride).

OP here.
Thank you all for your posts. I have been reading them everyday after work. I have been very busy with finishing up my projects at work, buying last minute stuff, and making some reservations. In addition, I had to spend most of the morning at the Pediatrician. DD12 was convinced that she has pneumonia!! Thank god, it is just a cold and she is already getting better.
I will be busy cleaning the house (yes, I do that before all our vacations, hate coming back to a dirty house) and packing bags, so I will probably just read your posts and not respond.
