We pick her up from the Shelter on Saturday. We are still working on a name. I have never housetrained a puppy but I have been reading up on it and I think we are ready. I have a spot in the yard I'd like to train her to use and I bought some of that pee pee spray that attracts them to the spot. Did i just throw my money away or does it work?

Also, how long can we expect to have to get up at night to let her out to use the potty? She is about 8 weeks now.

Trying to figure out how to post a pic.

congrats!
figure out a name quickly, & when you get her tell her 'her' name constantly,,
we are in the process also of housebreaking a puppy (who is now 11 weeks old).
I have read that the spray & the housbreaking pads do work. we have 3 other dogs, so that is not a problem here as there is enough dog potty area smell that got her going.
suggestions. keep a collar on & take it out on a leash, even if the area is easily accessed. this wil lkeep the puppy focused on one thing, ( not going off & playing).. tell the puppy "go potty" & "hurry up" . it will eventually learn these words mean what they say!
is someone going to be around all the time? it takes a lot shorter time when you constantly watch the puppy. .that means WATCH the puppy, not staring at the tv or texting etc. puppies can pee really fast!
take puppy out a lot, at least once an hour when awake. give them time to poop , also, they need to walk about to get that done & they will usually give you a sign they are ready,, usually by turning in circles.
the major problem at night is they will be lonesome & cry for that. you are crating the puppy for when you are not around & at night right?
ours was up about every 2 hours when she was first here, & now after one week is sleeping at least 5.
persistance & paying attention is the key. it will take a lot longer if she goes potty in the house & no one catches it. (btw, you can only scold the puppy if you catch her in the act....... meaning grabbing her & taking outside immediately. if you find puddles or piles the puppy will not know what the heck you are talking about.)
the next hurdle is when the puppy finally goes to the door to tell you then they want out. but of course they are smart suckers. they also think they are going to be able to go outside to just play. so you never know when they really mean buisness:rotfl2:

have fun.. puppies are fun!

Can't wait to see the pictures! We just picked up our Newfoundland puppy sunday-too adorable for words! Take her out about every two hours, and around 15-20 minutes after she eats, drinks or plays hard. Keep her on a leash until she goes, and then do your happy potty dance. Which is great fun at 2am. I think the average is they can hold it for 1 hour for every month of their age -8 weeks =2 hours, our puppy is 11 weeks and she can go for about 4 now, but if I take her every 2 hours she will still go potty. Good luck. Sometimes it's like putting shoes on a chicken!!

My puppy is now 12 weeks, we got him at 7 1/2 weeks. The first few nights we were up every couple of hours! The next two weeks we put him to bed around 12, he got up about 3 or 4 to pee, then back to sleep until 6:30. Now he can hold it all night...11 - 6:30.

We are using a crate...it is the best for potty training.

We have an 11 week old Labrador, and he is slowly getting the hang of the housetraining! He is as cute as a button!

As for the getting up at night, my friend who runs a puppy training business, tells me that they can sleep through the night at about 3 to 4 months. Up until then, he needs to have someone nearby at night, so that when he wakes up in his crate (you ARE using crate training, I hope), he can be let out immediately. If not, and he is allowed to go in his crate, he will think that is OK and will continue to do that.

Yes, we have a crate for him and we used the inner wall to make it small for now. We have gates put up so she only has access to the middle part of the house.

After some research we are feeding the Chicken Soup puppy food. Also, the shelter called today to say that the brother puppy has a patch of ringworm under him arm. Our little girl doesn't have any patches that they can see yet but we should watch out for it. Ugh. I'm sure she'll have fleas and need a dish soap bath right away. Man, there's s lot of prep for anew puppy.

As far as posting a pic, does it have to be posted to a web site first? I tried to use the isert image button and the url of the shelter pic but nothing came up.

I posted the link, you can see the picture that way. For some reason it is not allowing the picture to display as it would using the post a picture function.

She is adorable! Congratulations!

I fed my puppies Chicken Soup for puppies from time to time. They get really bored of food after 1 bag so I am constantly switching.

Thank you for doing that. Isn't she sweet. I am a bit concerned about the brother's ringworm. Hopefully she won't get it. Tomorrow is the big day!! She looks a little shepherd maybe? Hard to tell.

She is precious...so adorable! Good luck with her and remember....patience is the key to raising a puppy! ;)

As I said previously, we are in the middle of house training, and I can give you some tips:

Always take puppy out first thing in the morning, last thing at night.
They usually have to pee and/or poop within 15 minutes of eating. You will be feeding puppy 3 times a day initially, so always take them out after meals.
PRAISE LAVISHLY every time puppy poos or pees outside!!
Inside, WATCH puppy constantly. If she starts circling with her nose on the floor, she is about to go. Take her out immediately.
When you catch her having an accident, say loudly, "NO!", grab her, and take her out.
Puppies generally can hold their pee for their age in months +1 hours. For example, a 2 month old puppy can hold their pee for 3 hours.
Expect some accidents and mess-ups, even after you think they are fully trained.
Get a good enzyme spot cleaner for the accidents. You want to get the scent out as soon as possible - otherwise, puppy will continue to go in that spot.

Have fun!
