We pick her up from the Shelter on Saturday. We are still working on a name. I have never housetrained a puppy but I have been reading up on it and I think we are ready. I have a spot in the yard I'd like to train her to use and I bought some of that pee pee spray that attracts them to the spot. Did i just throw my money away or does it work?
Also, how long can we expect to have to get up at night to let her out to use the potty? She is about 8 weeks now.
Trying to figure out how to post a pic.
congrats!
figure out a name quickly, & when you get her tell her 'her' name constantly,,
we are in the process also of housebreaking a puppy (who is now 11 weeks old).
I have read that the spray & the housbreaking pads do work. we have 3 other dogs, so that is not a problem here as there is enough dog potty area smell that got her going.
suggestions. keep a collar on & take it out on a leash, even if the area is easily accessed. this wil lkeep the puppy focused on one thing, ( not going off & playing).. tell the puppy "go potty" & "hurry up" . it will eventually learn these words mean what they say!
is someone going to be around all the time? it takes a lot shorter time when you constantly watch the puppy. .that means WATCH the puppy, not staring at the tv or texting etc. puppies can pee really fast!

take puppy out a lot, at least once an hour when awake. give them time to poop , also, they need to walk about to get that done & they will usually give you a sign they are ready,, usually by turning in circles.
the major problem at night is they will be lonesome & cry for that. you are crating the puppy for when you are not around & at night right?
ours was up about every 2 hours when she was first here, & now after one week is sleeping at least 5.
persistance & paying attention is the key. it will take a lot longer if she goes potty in the house & no one catches it. (btw, you can only scold the puppy if you catch her in the act....... meaning grabbing her & taking outside immediately. if you find puddles or piles the puppy will not know what the heck you are talking about.)
the next hurdle is when the puppy finally goes to the door to tell you then they want out. but of course they are smart suckers. they also think they are going to be able to go outside to just play. so you never know when they really mean buisness
have fun.. puppies are fun!
