We call them "Tricky Trays" as well, and it really is more complicated than a standard silent auction or raffle.
There are different tiers for the prizes - some might be worth $5-$15, and then different levels ranging all the way up to thousands of dollars.
The ticket prices for the raffle also vary, in proportion to the value of the item you want to win. You might pay fifty cents for the lowest tier, for example, but $50 (or more) for the highest one.
That's what makes it tricky - tricky for the organizers to keep straight, mainly!!
An auction would give each item directly to the highest bidder, and that is the only person would actually pay anything. With a tricky tray "auction" everyone who wants to win the prize pays.
A Yankee Swap, as I have always known it, is when somebody chooses an item and unwraps it, and then the next person can choose a new prize or take the prize the first person won, and so on and so on. I've never even seen money change hands on those, other than bringing an item for the swap, so I don't see how that could even be a fundraiser.
