Some people simply do not believe in returning gifts. My mother is one of them. I have never had the nerve to return anything she gives and keep gifts on hand to prove their presence for several years. My mom is also big on presents being a surprise and isn't into lists or suggestions.
It's a real shame for your dd, but I think if she refuses to listen to your hints and suggestions I'd chalk it up to a "grandma doesn't understand" lesson. Your ds is probably going to be learning that lesson soon as well. Maybe it will be easier on your dd if you let her give it straight to charity, rather than having ds get double. Hopefully the hints will work and you won't have to!
