So if my camera is 10.2MP how many pictures will a 4GB memory card hold if I take pictures in jpeg format? Raw? How about an 8GB?

Thanks for your help!!

It is not quite that easy. Every camera has different file sizes. Check your manual. If it does not give the number for 4GB or 8GB, but does for 1GB, you can do a simple multiplication. Or, if you have a 1GB card, you can see how many it shows and then multiply. If you only have a 512MB card, that is 0.5GB. A 256MB card is 0.25GB.

Well If you have any of your images on your PC you can see the file size and then divide.

But also remember that not every image will be the same size, images with little detail compress much smaller than those with lots of detail. Also the same scene can produce different file sizes depending on the ISO the image is shot with. So an image shot at ISO 100 will compress smaller than the same scene shot at ISO 800.

Thanks for your help. The camera is being shipped to me (I should get it tomorrow!! ) and I ordered the memory card separate, I ended up ordering the 8GB, I guess I was just wondering around what number to expect.

I guess I'll just have to be patient!

Usually the memory card comes with a chart showing how many pictures it will hold depending on several things.

Just remember to take your photos at the highest resolution possible. You might not want to do raw but the highest jpg you can.

I get about 280 RAW files per 4GB card on my D300- which is 12.3mp- so you should get a bit more than that. IIRC I use to get around 200 RAW files on 2GB cards on my 10.2mp D80.

I bought the Nikon D60. I am so excited! I can't wait for it to get here! I thought it was coming today, but looks like I have to wait until Tuesday.

The only file size info I could find on the D60 was a chart on Dpreview.com

According to the chart, the average file size of a JPG at the highest resolution, in fine mode, is about 3,400kb, so a 1gb card would hold about 290 shots.

Size of a RAW image, according to the chart, is 9,100kb, so a 1gb card would hold about 109 shots.

These numbers are rough estimations; the size of a JPG file changes according to the content of the image, so the actual number of shots a card will hold varies greatly depending on what you're taking pics of. I've never shot in raw myself, but I believe that RAW files are always the same size because they are uncompressed - is that correct?

Anyway, Binkrin - get more cards! No matter where you go or what you shoot, having only one memory card for your digital camera is not a good thing; you whouls have at least one backup that's equal in size to your primary card, and I like having several backups. My primaries are 1gb each, and I have several 512mb backups.

It's also good to split your pics up when you're on vacation at a place like WDW so that if you lose a card - or your camera - you don't lose more than one day's pics. If you don't have a laptop or some other portable storage device to download the pics from your cards, you should have at lease one card per day of your trip, plus a backup or two. After each day, take used cards out of your camera and leave them in your room safe, and carry only empty cards with you in the parks.

Thank you for your help! I will be getting more memory cards, I was just wondering what I would be looking forward to with my new camera. (That was not in my possession at the time of the original post. ;) )

Plus, my husband is just getting used to the money factor of my expensive hobby. I have to break him in slowly... :rotfl2:

SLR photography is a whole different world. It will take you a while to get used to it, but once you do, the capabilities of a good SLR will make you wonder how you ever took pics without one.
