Another Lynching on the Horizon

As a big Live fan I'm happy to see it, but I'm surprised anybody even remembers them.

I suppose it would be a worth complaint, if it were actually valid. Daughtry never said that he made up the arrangement -- never said anything to indicate that at all. Tempest in a teapot. :sad2:

I thougth those who were familiar with the piece said that he did a carbon copy of the performance.

While I missed his comment....I didn't care for the arrangement regardless who wrote it.

and he gets complimented for refusing to compromise and being himself while others are told to leave their comfort zone.

That is more interesting to me than the lynching you are describing (that I wasn't even aware was taking place).

If he could truly do a "carbon copy" performance, then more power to him. That makes him as good as a professional. In reality, he still gave a performance of his own... it wasn't actually a "carbon copy" but had lots of Daughtry overtones to it.

Of course, if you don't like that kind of music, you won't like the performance. :)

I think he's complimented because he's actually performing marketable music. People actually buy the kind of performance he provides. While many people may gush about Taylor, they're not buying CDs by people who sing what he sings or sings like he sings. When the judges tell people to leave their comfort zone, you can read that as a hint that they're saying, "It's good, dawg, but it won't sell records."

I heard the side by side of Chris and Live's on Fox News. Chris's performance was much better and I really liked his version. He never said he came up with the new arrangement either so what's the big deal?

I thought he was awesome a couple of weeks ago (I think the performance before the top 12).

Some diehard fans of the group who origniated the song disagreed.

Much like some of us Patsy fans thought Kellie tanked when she performed Patsy.

So I think Chris is good.

however some genres work for some people.

Didn't Simon chastise on previous years those who stuck with country in the beginning--but it was their golden ticket in the end (either to victory or to a post-idol career)?

Getting on poor Paris b/c she likes singing old stuff--but then whenever she sings something new--it isn't great. Well DUH---she likes the old stuff. And yes--old stuff is marketable.

ITA. We also thought his version of Live was alot better! :teeth:

Myself, I'm disappointed that someone as talented as Chris didn't do something completely his own - I would rather he rework a song from the 50's himself (ala Live) and perform it.

I guess to me, especially after last week when he used the RHCP cover of Higher Ground for Stevie Wonder week, it just seemed slightly like a cop out. Especially when the judges praise him over and over for his originality - he needs to live up to that praise and not just cover other people that redid music to suit a different genre.. but bring it on himself.

But no lynching for me. I still like Chris. For me it was Chris and Taylor, but because of his performances over the past two weeks.. I lean towards Taylor as being my favorite. But that is JMHO :)

It is interesting but face it Idol does not really want true origanality or they would be doing origanal songs. I like the show, don't get me wrong but...

I completely agree with you. Everyone is doing a cover song until it gets down to the final two, then they sing an original song and we choose the winner.

I think to come down on Chris is crazy, everyone is singing someone elses stuff on this show in the first place. Leave Chris alone!!! :cheer2: I Love him

I remember reading somewhere that Chris named Live as his favorite band so I think it's no big deal for him to emulate his favorites. I enjoyed the performance.

Some of those comments were way overe the top. While I love Live, they're not a really well-known band and the judges probably never heard their version before. Chris never said that this was his own original version did he? So when the judges said that, was he supposed to say "Actually, I sang it like Live's version"? I don't think so.

I think it would be interesting to have the contestants write their own songs like on Rock Star: INXS.

I liked the version he sang and I knew it wasn't original, so I guess it seemed a bit fake of him to seemingly take credit for it. I don't read about the show, I just watch it. All I saw was him sing it, the judges praise him for being "original" and him smile and thank them. I think if you are going to copy a performance like that, you have to give full disclosure or realize people might think less of you.

It's no big deal, I just didn't like that some people might be giving him credit for coming up with that all by himself.
