It's another lovely day in Calgary. We should be sitting right around 75F all week with clear, sunny days and cooler nights. Dry though, so painfully dry. The humidity right now is 34%, which if you've never experienced it means scratchy eyes and nose, uncomfortable skin and static electricity everywhere. Believe it or not, in the winter the air is even drier.

When my younger brother moved out to B. C. two years ago he and dsil were experiencing the weather as opposed to just hearing about it from their daughter and her family. Dsil wasn't adjusting to some of the conditions and my db was forever teasing her. So... being the great, only, and favourite sister he has I started teasing HIM starting with umbrella pictures. The other day I told him we were bringing full sun and, 80ish degree temps with us, sans those umbrellas.

Today I asked him if he wanted me to bring a bathing suit for him or suntan lotion. I'm living on the edge though 'cause he's the prankster in our family; which makes ME wonder what I can expect!

Well a bit of sad news.

The in-law's dog (I believe an Irish Setter) who they've had since he was old enough to go to them (so about 2 1/2 3 months old I believe) got hit by a car and died today. He was about 10months old

I was just talking to my step-father-in-law on 4th of July if they were going to do a fence, invisible fence or dog run since they moved out to the country but he said that they were just training him and then let him go free. Well he was walking him today (I'm assuming not far since he cannot be on his feet for too too long these days) but he didn't have his leash with him since the dog had been doing well on staying close to him. Well the dog saw a bird and ran after it and a car/truck (not sure which one) was near-ish and clipped him. They believe he died instantly by a hit on the head.

A leash would have only done so much though as a dog who sees something they want can sure tug on the leash. People don't walk their dogs all the time on leashes here in my neighborhood (despite leash laws) and sometimes they are walking on the road sometimes with the dog at the most vunerable spot. It was a concern I had though when they moved to the country they had already had their mailbox hit and destroyed (as far as being usable for mail) by a driver just a week or so after they moved to the new house. Step-father-in-law is just beside himself and we feel just terrible for them. A sad day indeed .

So very sorry to read about their dog. We too are in the country, and Charlie (our retriever) is never given free run except in his fenced in area. However, just today my brother visited, and Charlie did not STAY on our front deck but ran to the driveway to greet him. Going forward from now on, he can wait on the deck, but with the security gate in place.

I really don't know if a leash would have prevented it in this case because I know how strong dogs can pull and tug on leashes but I would be lying if I didn't say I was nervous for the future after my step-father-in-law said he was going to let him run free.

I'm glad all was well with Charlie today though animals can be quite stubborn sometimes. You should hear the attitude out kitty Apollo gives us when I tell him no lol.

'Let this be a lesson to you' said the border officers to ME on Sunday morning... sigh.

My dh and I decided to go to our local (45 minutes drive) Niagara Falls Casino on Sunday morning. Innocent enough we were close to the entrance, when I remembered and stated that I had forgotten my purse, so the buffet would be full price this run. Dh missed the turn listening to ME, and so we had to find a spot to turn around. We were at the entrance to the Duty Free stop, I suggested that it best to do a three point, and not go through the sensor gates.

Dh decided not to listen to me then, and we found ourselves going to the USA with ME sans any ID at all, nothing! The American officer was very nice but stern about that which he COULD do. Then, directed us to turn around at the first intersection to go back. The Canadian officer reinterated with more emphasis. Mam...sigh.
We could have sent you to Immigration Detention 'Let this be a lesson to YOU!'

Btw, there were lots of Americans returning home from Canada, must have been after their 4th of July vacations. Also, many going into Canada. On a side note hours later at the casino while at the buffet, and because we had asked for a window seat across from that very Duty Free stop entrance; We observed many cars make the same mistake with a few whom waited for someone to enter, and when the gates went up, turn around to leave that way!

I had no idea there were certain spots near the border that were easy to get turned around. Some of the people got lucky and it was a quick check and others it was a several hour ordeal.

In the early 80s We were in a car crossing from Northern Ireland into Ireland (the Republic) and as we approached the border there were armed guards and barriers of sand bags and a serious looking military vehicle. They asked to see our passports and suddenly the whole tenor changed..."You're Americans??? Hey guys, they're Americans!!!!" Guys start to smile and wave us on through.
They were actually pleased to see people coming to visit their country. (I warned you there wasn't much to the story.)
