I am the homeroom parent for my oldest DDs class, and I got a phone call from one of the other parents in the PTL concerning a teacher appreciation luncheon that the PTL is sponsoring on Monday (yes, Memorial Day). They normally ask paretns to donate food and/or $$ for this luncheon. And just to confuse everyone, there is also a teacher appreciation fund. The fund is strictly voluntary, and all the money collected is divided evenly among the teachers. Teachers are also given a list of families that participated, but not how much each family donated.

Apparently there has been quite a bit of confusion about these two things, so the PTL asked all of the homeroom parents to call their parents and explain the difference. A pain, but no big deal. So I try to call 13 sets of parents last night between 7:50 pm and 8:10 pm. I talked to about half of them, and left a message with some. Again, no big deal.

Well, one of the families decides they need to return my call which would have been great if they hadn't called at 10:45 pm!!  DH nad I were both asleep, and he had to get up early this morning. Needless to say, we were both a little peeved. I never return phone calls after 9pm, and I even apologized to all my parents for calling them so "late" on a Thursday night whin I called.

OK, done venting! Thanks for listening!

That is extremely rude. It amazes me that some have no concept of time and phone etiquette.

Wow, that is too late for calling.

Once, our PTA president call me at 6:45 a.m. to request help for a project! Who calls at the hour!

We were sound asleep! I said no, of course.

I agree. It is rude to phone after 9:00 pm unless it is to family who is expecting the call: "Yes, we made it home safe so you can go to bed."

I don't call anyone after 9:00 p.m., and not before 8:00 a.m. and I don't like to receive late/early phone calls either. My DH's brother-in-law is one of those early callers and it bugs me to no end. Most times we don't bother to answer and just let the machine pick it up. I've been tempted to call him around 10:00 or 11:00 at night though just to "return the favor" and see how he likes being awakened as he's an "early to bed/early to rise" person but we are not!!

I don't think it is rude at all. First is there is no time for the parents to postpone the call. My guess is that monies have to be in by the next day since the luncheon will be on the Monday. Parents may be confused and want to make sure they do the right thing. Both may work and may leave early in AM. It's a judgement call if the late phone call will be offensive, but what is worse a rude phone call or being black balled for not contributing to the teacher gift fund.

What's really bad is calling during the day when the parent works nights. oooooooooops I've learned to ask the kids at school if mom or dad works at night now. ;)
