DD just bought an iphone 5c with her own money through Virgin Mobile and now I'm wondering if we should get the insurance on it. Do you have insurance on your iphone? If so, is it through the provider (Virgin Mobile for us), AppleCare or someone else? Thanks!!! You guys were all so helpful with my other cell phone question, thought I'd ask this one! :goodvibes

All 4 of us got our first smartphones for Christmas. Only mine is the iphone. I insured the 2 kids phones for sure. Not that they're careless but they have both lost phones in the past where they simply have no idea where it got to. (Granted, they were much younger but still...) Another time ds, now 17, once lost it out of a Velcro cargo pants pocket while riding a roller coaster at our local Six Flags. Stuff happens.

Dh is a welder/industrial mechanic and is really hard on phones. He could easily drop it into a huge tank of chemicals and never see it again. Insurance is a must for him.

I opted to not buy insurance for my own phone because I'm very careful with it. It's either in my pocket at work (deep pockets in my scrubs) or locked in my locker. I got an Otterbox case to protect it from drops, scratches, broken glass, etc. Ds17 has already bumped over a glass of water on it while in the case and though it's not meant to be waterproof, barely half a drop of water got inside the case.

Insurance through ATT is $7/month for each insured phone. It's expensive but it would cost much more if they lost their phone. FWIW, I always drop insurance once each line is eligible for an upgrade. At that point, if it's lost or damaged, we can just upgrade to a new phone. I don't see the point in having ins. then.

No. But I won't even take mine out of the house until the Otterbox arrives. I drop that thing all the time. A good case is far better than insurance IMHO.

I just bought a 5s through T-Mobile and bought the insurance and a good Otterbox Armor case. I want the phone to be drop proof and waterproof since with MDX I'll be using it so much in the parks.

3 iPhones and a Galaxy S3 in our house, no insurance on any. If someone breaks their phone they grab one of the old iPhones and use that until their eligible for an upgrade.

I actually bought the Otterbox before I even ordered the phone.

We have five iPhones and only my two youngest have insurance on theirs. They seem to be more careless then the rest of us. :rolleyes1

I'm a 44 year old woman who considers herself pretty careful/responsible.

I have broken both my Iphone 4s, and my Ipad2. The Ipad happened first, and just slipped off the dresser when we were watching a movie(had it hooked up to the tv), this was back when Apple was still doing free replacements, so I got another Ipad free of charge.

About 6 months later, my DH dropped my Iphone facedown on the floor, it was in a case (a really cute mickey one), but the screen still cracked. Fortunately I had applecare on that, so they gave me another phone for $50. Now the Iphone is in an Otterbox case. It has even fallen out of my pocket while jogging and just bounced off the street.

The Ipad is now in a Griffin case (heavy duty like an otterbox).

So apparently it's not just the kids!

I agree! I would never trust myself, I'm always dropping my phone (just a tracfone), DD is pretty good, she's had an ipod touch for years and has never had a problem.

I didn't when I bought my iPhone nor my husband's iPad but we did buy a warranty our son's iPod Touch. He and I both have Griffin Survivor cases on them to help in case they drop and so far, 2 years in to the iPod Touch, no issues.

No, I don't. In general I think insurance is only worth it if it is protecting you against catastrophic loss. If I dropped my phone often, I'd just get a really good case.

3 iphones here and 2 are covered by SquareTrade insurance. I don't carry coverage on mine. My phones tend to last long after I am eligible for an upgrade. I also keep my old phone as a back up in case something happens to the one I have in use.

I cover my kids' phones because they tend to be less careful. My son has dropped 2 phones in the toilet within the last 3 years. My daughter sent her iphone 3s into the sink when washing her hands at clinic. It was well-worth the cost of coverage plus the $50 deductible to be able to replace those phones rather than pay OOP for brand new ones.

This thread has got me thinking...I just upgraded both myself & DS13 to an iPhone 4S because it was a free upgrade. I planned on getting the insurance on each at $11/month - but we still have our old Rumor Reflex phones....so we'd be able to just switch back to those if one of the iPhones broke/got lost correct? I'd be fine doing that, then just waiting for the next upgrade for free....instead of shelling out $22/month I think that sounds like a plan!

Now DS16 has his own iPhone 5 that he bought himself, and we do have the insurance on it (he pays it). It's already paid for itself, he broke it twice in the 1st year he had it & they replaced it for free.

I have an endorsement on my Home Insurance Policy. It is called a computer endorsement (most insurance companies have this you just have to ask to have it added). It covers computers, laptops, tablets, iPods, and smartphones. It costs me $22/year to have this and I would have a $50 deductible (it would not count against me if I have a claim on my insurance). It covers everything except if you intentionally damaged it.

I love it because it covers everyone in the family and all their devices. It gives me such piece of mind.

I do not have an iPhone, but I generally feel that insurance through the carrier is not worth it. At least that is true for Verizon. The last time I looked it was like $7 a month and then it still had a deductible if you have to make a claim. I think the deductible was like $100. So, for a 2 year contract with the insurance an the deductible you are paying $7 X 24 = $168 + $100 deductible is about $300. Yes, that is less than the full price of a new phone, but at that price I think I'd prefer to take my chances and as PPs have said, invest in a good cover. Also, I always hold on to my old phone as an "insurance" policy. ;)

Agreed. In recent years Verizon has tried to "sneak" insurance in on me, and I have to call them and fuss at them. I won't pay for that. I have a drawer full of flip phones that we can use, and we have, in case someone breaks a phone. I dunked my phone in a swimming pool (not an iphone) a few years ago and my punishment was carrying an old clunky phone around for being so careless.

I now have an iphone and an otterbox. When I drop it, and I do, it sounds like dropping a marshmallow.
