Another Great Trip to the Poly, but...

We jsut got back from another great trip to the Poly, our favorite resort. It was great. DW surprised me by getting a room with Concierge which we love. Between the Concierge service and the Dinning Plan, we were very well fed the entire trip. That said, the only thing that marred an otherwise wonderful trip was the Disney Bus System. This service is the worst! I get angry just about everytime I ride it, but this trip really got me. We used the bus to get from the Poly to MGM, Animal Kingdom, Blizzard Beach and Downtown Disney, each on separate days. The trips to MGM, AK and BB weren't too bad, but the trip DD was ridiculous. I was so angry I wrote an email to WDW to express my displeasure.

I generally found the buses to be smelly, overcrowded and noisey. Just not the same experience that you get on the monorail. Several times the buses that came were mismarked as to their destination and I am certain people missed a bus because they did not ask every driver where they were going.

By far the worst experience was our trip to Downtown Disney on our final day. We arrived at the Poly bus stop to find a bus to DD loading. There were a LOT of people getting on and it was obvious to us that we weren't going to make it. Sure enough, us and another family could not get on, but the bus driver assured us another bus would come along soon. Well we sat down and waited. Buses came for other parks and left and after about 20 minutes i started to get annoyed. the next bus came and I asked the dirver about the next bus to DD. He said that he would call it in. The next bus came and same thing. Several buses came for MGM and AK but none for DD. As we waited, a crowd again formed and DW and I knew we were going to have to be agressive to get on the that DD bus. Sure enough, the bus pulled up 45 minutes after the last one and the whole crowd stood and formed a line. Fortunately DW and I and the kids were near the front of the line but we still had to push to get on. THe same with the other family that was waiting. If they weren't agressive, they were going to be left behind again. By the time that I got on the bus I was livid. I stopped and told the driver that we were waiting 45 minutes and that was completely unacceptable and asked that he let his dispatcher know what is going on. I also said as nicely as I could, that I knew that it was not his fault. He said he would call it in and I believe he did because, sure enough, some of the people waiting did not get on. Little did they know they would also probably have to wait 45 minutes for the next bus.

What further annoys me is that other bus stops have people from the bus system waiting to assist passengers. I have seen this at GF, BC and YC but never at the Poly. It is very aggrevating.

I am a Transportation Professional so I know that this could be solved easily. There are systems now that will alert riders as to when to expect the next bus. They are not expensive and could easlier be installed at every bus stop in WDW so people will know when to expect the next bus. I have written WDW with this complaint. I just hope that they will do something about it. I am also contemplating whether to complain to the Manager of the Poly. I paid a lot of money to stay there and do not think it is too much to ask for decent bus service. JMHO Jay

JayCT-

I agree with you. I've always felt the bus system at WDW needed improvement. We have stayed at the CBR the last two trips. I don't know how many times there would be 2 busses for the same theme park at the buss stop at the same time. It's great for the guests waiting for that bus but what about the other parks? I think they need more busses in my opionion.

Oh where do I start on this issue? This was our biggest problem too. One day we waited an hour for a bus to MGM. Saw 6 AK buses and come drop off people. One bus for DTD dropped off but wouldn't let people on.

Jay, I will be staying at the Poly in August so this info is very helpful. Did you catch the bus right outside of Poly? Do you think if I would walk over to TTC that the chances of getting on a bus would be easier?

What's remarkable is how the bus service can run so hot and cold for people. We've been lucky I guess to have never waited more than 10-15 minutes or so. How can this be so good for some yet so eratic for others? you bet I'd be steamed too. 45 minutes is way out of line.

Sounds like next time your wife needs to surprise you with a rental car! While I have never had problems with Disney transportation (I stayed at Pop, bus service was great! :thumbsup2 ) I think even dressed up in mouseears, public transportation is just that, public transportation. Besides, Disney does recommend you give their transportation an hour to get you to your destination, so it sounds like they were not too far off  .

i also feel the same way the buses stink . but you will get no sympathy here i have often vented on these boards about the buses, and my feelings were shot down ...i got the same responses every time disney does the best they can, if you dont like it get a rental, its beter than nothing or my favorite i think the bus system is fine i never had a problem (disney employee) or
someone who has lots of disney stock. the fact is it gets worse every year and it comes down to money, i dont want to hear about the new gps system or more people are going to disney (true ) fact is they need more buses more often to keep everyone happy and since they call it the .................."happiest place on earth " lets spend a little more money on more drivers and buses more often. every bus does not have to be standing room only on every trip its o.k. to have a seat for everyone, even one or two empty seats would be o.k. disney you will still make money , i also think the standing is dangerous.

A pet peeve of mine also. When we were there in April and stayed at SS the bus service was not good and the bus drivers were downright surly. I, too, wrote to Disney about the bus service pointing out that since the inception of Magical Express and virtually having their guests "captive", they have an obligation to provide efficient and fast service transportation service. At one point, it took us 1 1/2 hr. to get to dinner and at least that long to get back to the resort. This was 3 hrs. out of our day and was just not acceptable. Maybe if enough of us that have these experiences would write to Disney about it, they would make more of an effort to correct the situation.:)

Transportation to Downtown Disney seems to be the worst.

I agree. DW and I tried to get on a bus to DTD in 2004, but one never came. Finally, we just hopped on a bus wondering where it would take us (the sign said Epcot), but strangely enough we ended up in DTD... :confused3

I have to agree as well, and was glad that others shared our opinion. Last June we waited-- I can't even tell you how long-- for a bus from the Poly (where we were staying) to MGM in the evening. My husband finally hailed a cab. We were actually happy to spend the extra money just to get moving!!
I panic about this when planning a new trip. I would love to save money and stay at a moderate, but don't know if I could only rely on the bus system for transport!!

I agree with you about the bus system and it's only getting worse as far as I can tell. We normally use the bus system exclusively. This time, I rented a car and am so glad we did. We usually take the bus to Downtown Disney and the Magic Kingdom. We waited forever, then decided to take the rental car. The people in line were still waiting as we left the resort. The car saved so much time! I'll never visit WDW without a rental car again.

Of course, the bus system was the last reason for us to stay on site, so we'll be exploring options outside the world in the future. We don't use EMH, nor do I find the Disney resorts to be anything overly special (at least not worth the prices they're asking). We used the dining plan this last trip, but I didn't like being tied to our dining reservations. I never thougth I'd say this, but it was too much food. Even DGS was saying "We have to eat--again?"

We have our first stay at the Poly in October and I have been nervous about the buses there. I haven't read too many good things about them. So we are thinking rental car but hate to spend the money. My thoughts are we'll have one maybe two days at AK and one day at MGM and the rest of our vacay will be MK or Epcot so I'm hoping we'll do ok w/the buses.

This is why we love to get a rental car! Taxis are good too. :)

Out of curiosity, does anybody know what it would cost to take a taxi from the Poly to MGM or Downtown Disney?

I will say this, that was the only day out of 9 days we had problems with the buses.

Great post. Well said!! I couldn't agree more!!!:thumbsup2

Yes, I have to agree, it's either feast or famine with the buses, and it stinks. Not just at the Poly but at every resort I've stayed at, except maybe OKW for some reason. By far my worst experience was at BW going to DTD and back. Holy cow. That was the most consistently awful route I've ever taken, and you just feel so trapped when you're in the middle of it. It took an hour and 45 minutes one night. Then of course there are the times you luck out and happen to catch the right bus just as it's leaving with plenty of seats available-- it feels like you hit the lottery! I guess I don't fully understand why it's so uneven. And I do agree that the standing does not seem safe at all to me.

Transportation to Downtown Disney seems to be the worst.
I agree with you 100%. Whenever my family and I go to Downtown Disney we always have our own transportation, because we refuse to take the Disney Transport Bus to there. We don't mind taking it to MGM and Animal Kingdom, however to Downtown Disney is a big no. We can get there in 15 minutes with our car and on the Disney Transport Bus it could take 45 minutes or longer.
