Another duty free question

If you make a purchase at the duty free in Halifax and are going through Newark, how does that work? You can't take alcohol on the plane, but you don't get your luggage until your final destination, so you can't put it in there.

You can bring alcohol on the plane after you buy it at the duty free and then you can put it in your carry on.

Just wanted to add that my husband says we had to pick up the alcohol at the gate after we purchased it. I can't remember.

You need to pay for your duty free purchase and show the clerk your boarding pass. When it comes close to boarding time they will bring the purchase to the departure gate sealed in a shopping bag where you will have to show your receipt to collect it. At that point you treat the bag like another piece of carry-on.

I've not bought duty free in Halifax, but this is how I've brought bottles back to Halifax from different foreign airports.

What I am wondering is if we purchase it in Halifax, I know we get it when we board, but when we change planes in Newark, what do we do with it? We won't have access to our luggage to put it in there, and I am not sure about boarding with it in a carry on.

Dennise--my guess would be that you can't purchase duty free liquor because it would taken from you before you board the plane in Newark. You should confirm this with the salespeople in the Duty Free shop in Halifax.
I witnessed one of the Duty Free shop staff in YUL refuse to sell a large format liquid to a passenger whose final destination involved changing planes in another airport. As the Duty Free staffmember said, "I can sell it to you, but they will just take it from you at the next airport because it is over the limit for carryon liquids." The item in question was sunscreen.

They will only take the liquids from you if you need to go through security again, otherwise you are ok to carry the bag on to the next plane.
