We leave next Saturday and the sickness God's have somewhat frowned upon us (not good to be sick....but better to have caught it early). Two of my daughters have strep throat (diagnosed Friday). They were prescribed Amoxicillan (the pink liquid version) that has to be kept cold. By the time we leave they will both be down to only 3 more doses...but you know they say take the whole 10 days worth. Would we be able to carry on these bottles (way more than 3 oz but they are the original bottles from the pharmacy) and use ice packs to keep them cold or are we going to have to check them. If we check them will the ice packs cause any sort of alarm for the baggage screeners?

Thanks for any help!

Check with your pharmacist to be sure but it's my understanding that it doesn't really need to be kept cold, they put that on the label because it tastes better.

Cool-paks for the purpose of cooling Rx medications are specifically allowed under TSA rules: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/specialneeds/editorial_1059.shtm

BTW, no matter what the medication, RX or OTC, you *NEVER* want to put medications in checked baggage. Not only would misplaced baggage cause you to miss doses and possibly have to battle your insurance company over getting replacements, but meds are targeted by thieves, who just take the bottles without reading the labels, and depend on their fence to tell them what is and is not valuable on the black market.

Wow. I was thinking I needed to check the OTC meds. Thanks for the link.

We, too, will be traveling with Amoxycillin for DS's double ear infection soon. Must be that time of year!

I would also recommend using a 'glove' or other type of "keeping the item cold sleeve" for around the amoxicillin...my DS's cover to their lunch water bottles comes to mind as something useful that does not contain gels.

I think the other poster is correct and Amox doesn't have to be kept cold, check with the pharmacist. Another Idea is Amox isn't very expensive why not see if you can get enough powder to mix 3 doses in the powder form and simply add water and mix it when you get there. Much more convenient than carrying it. also as long as you are not going when it is very hot it would probably stay cool enough in your carry on for a rather long time.

Thank you for the information. My wife did speak with our doctor today (while getting our third DD seen for a chest virus....when it rains it pours!!!) and he said to just slightly up their doses so that the last 3 will not matter. Which brings up another question which I'll post on a separate thread about travel refunds.
