If anyone could help us out with some planning that would be great!

We are leaving on Dec 23 to drive from central Jersey to somewhere in the southern part of NC. We can't leave until 245 because the school where I teach has a full day. If it takes us about 2 hours and 45 min to get to the Baltimore area and 3 and a half hours to get to DC....making us arrive near Baltimore around 530, and IF we get thru that near DC around 6/630, are we going to be sitting in traffic for hours on end?? Is there any route to avoid this? Will the traffic start earlier than normal due to it being the 23rd? So maybe it won't be AS heavy as normal around 5 or 6? Wishful thinking??

It's so hard to say.

I remember once when I live in Maryland and needed to get to my FILs house in Virginia on December 24th, the normally 1 hour trip took me 3 hours. Uuugh it was awful.

That said, holiday or not, you will be coming through DC at the height of rush hour. There is one alternate way around it but I don't think it is that great anymore. You take exit off in Maryland and take Rt. 301, down through southern Maryland, go across the river into Virginia and follow that down until you get to I-95. You avoid interstate 95 through DC that way. That said, the trip down 301 into southern Maryland is full of lights, traffic, and lots of other people that know this route (include truckers) and I'm not sure that this route is the winner it used to be 20 years ago.

Rt. 1 through Virginia is never a good option on these heavily traveled days because everyone, especially the locals, knows about it and it gets gridlocked sometimes even worse.

If you have 3 people in the car, you can make use of HOV lanes down from Springfield, VA through Quantico, VA. This gets you through some of the worst parts of I-95 traffic but it dumps you out onto the regular lanes of traffic above Fredericksburg, VA and you could still have another 8-10 miles of traffic.

The 23rd is on a Wednesday so I think that is going to be a good factor for you. By far, the worst traffic will be on the 24th.

Yes, hours on end. And yes, wishful thinking.

Normal afternoon rush hour traffic in Baltimore starts around 3:30 and stays heavy till about 6:30. If you pass through the area on I-95 during those hours, you will hit heavy, slow traffic, especially at the Fort McHenry Tunnel toll plaza, which can back up as much as 15 minutes on a normal day.

Dec 23, being a Wednesday this year, will NOT be a normal day - it will be an abnormally HEAVY day. Many people in the area will be taking Dec 24 off work to make a 4-day weekend, whether they get it as a paid holiday or not. The last work day before a 4-day weekend always has an abnormally heavy afternoon rush hour; my guess is that the Ft McHenry toll plaza will back up about 20-25 minutes during the hours you will be passing through, and traffic will move slowly most of the way through the Baltimore area. I've seen it on previous holidays; it ain't pretty.

Traffic on I-95 leading up to and leaving DC on a normal day is a royal PITA and is near-gridlock in several areas. On Dec 23 this year, it will be far worse, and the gridlock will start around 3pm and continue till past 7pm. Avoid DC until after 7pm if you value your sanity!

A large contributor to the problem is that I-95 does not run straight through DC as it does Baltimore; instead, I-95 traffic must follow one side or the other of the Capital Beltway (I-495), which is a huge loop surrounding the entire District. The majority of I-95 through traffic takes the east side, but traffic on the west side is just as heavy, so you save no time or trouble on either side.

Your best option is to NOT pass through either city during the rush hour. I understand wanting to leave home at 2:45 to miss the local rush hour, but as you approach Baltimore around 5pm, you should consider getting off the road for about 2 hours for an early dinner. The malls and stores will be quite busy, but restaurants generally will not be impossible at 5pm, so if you get off of I-95 at Exit 67B (MD 43, White Marsh Blvd), and make the first left onto Honeygo Blvd, you will be in the middle of the White Marsh Towncenter, which extends about 1/2 mile from White Marsh Blvd to Perry Hall Blvd.
Click here for a Bing map of the White Marsh Towncenter area

On the right side of Honeygo, you will see an Ikea, and the White Marsh Mall, which is home to plenty of mid-range stores, a food court, and a couple of cheap restaurants such as Fudruckers and Ruby Tuesday.

On the left side of Honeygo, you will find three slightly better chain restaurants - TGI Friday's, Red Lobster, and Bertucci's - and the Avenue At White Marsh. At the Avenue you will find more upscale shopping, a movie theater, Chilis, Don Pablo, Red Brick Station, and several more restaurants. There is also a Coldstone Creamery, if you're into that kind of ice cream (who isn't?)

It should be easy enough to kill two hours in White Marsh before resuming your drive. You may not want to stop, but look at it this way - you can spend two pleasant hours eating, shopping, listening to holiday music, and relaxing, or you can spend those two hours sitting in gridlock traffic on I-95 in Baltimore and I-495 in DC. Stopping for two hours WILL NOT add any time to your overall schedule; you will spend those two hours in Baltimore and DC no matter what. I recommend spending them pleasantly.

It's so hard to say.

MD 301 in southern MD is not much better an option than I-95 these days. The 301 corridor has undergone unbelievable overdevelopment during the last 10 years or so, and the road has not been widened to accommodate the extra traffic. In fact, more and more traffic signals and side streets have been added for all the new housing developments and shopping centers, so traffic moves a lot slower than it did 20 years ago. It's near gridlock during the afternoon rush hour, and the lack of alternative routes makes it a trap if there is a traffic accident that bottles up traffic.

I'd stick to the interstates through central Maryland, where you at least have a few alternative routes if I-95 gets shut down for a major accident (I-95, I-895 and I-695 east or west side to get past Baltimore; MD 295 between Baltimore and DC; and I-495 east or west to get around DC).

I agree with the 301 opinion. Lots of people suggest it so I just threw it out there but, personally, I *hate* it.

It's so funny about DC traffic--there are days that I think I can really predict it (like the Friday before Memorial Day) and then there will be NOTHING. It will be the Thursday before Memorial day that gets me and I'll never be expecting it and then my ride home on the Friday will be fine.:confused3

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving used to be a BEAR getting home, but that has now changed to the Tuesday and then I have no problems on the Wednesday.:confused3

It's just so hard to call it. I say assume the worst and try to avoid it.

Thanks for the suggestions! Our SIL has a half day and they are leaving around noon. :(
So there is no way around it unless I take the day off of work, right?
So if we leave at 245, stop at WHite March around 5. Leave around 7, we will have about 6 more hours till we get to Fayetteville, NC. We can probably do that without stopping and making good time with the kids sleeping and in pjs? Get there 1 am? Not bad I think. We wanted to go as far as possible this day to get to Orlando at a decent hour on Xmas eve to do food shopping for the house. So this leaves us with about 8 hours for Xmas eve.
Does this plan sound reasonable?
Thanks so much for everyone's help and opinions!

It sounds reasonable.

I think if it is one of those "bear" days, you may still very well hit something through the Northern Virginia area. If that is the case, Rt. 1 at that time of night would be a viable options. Also, make use of the HOV lanes from Springfield to Quantico. While they can back up, they are not nearly as bad as the regular lanes. It always amazes me as I zoom by the gridlocked traffic and I look over to the regular lanes and see all those people just sitting. I realize though that not all travelers are familiar with HOV lanes and don't know when and where they can exit them.

I drive everyday from fredericksburg VA to DC, DONT DO IT!!! It could be as long as 3 hours from Springfield to Fredericksburg (45miles) If it were me traveling on the 24th, I would try 78 to 81, then 81 to 64 to richmond

She's traveling on the 23rd though. And now she thinking about getting into the DC area closer to 8 pm (leaving Baltimore at 7:00). I think she might be okay.

This would all be solved if I could be rich and fly! lol

I was going to suggest that you try driving to BWI and catch flights from there as they can be had for $49 each way; however, probably not during those dates.

Sometimes when the airfare is that low, it almost makes sense to fly, even with 4 people. I always factor in the time I have to take off work to drive, the hotel room that I've got to stop in and the meals that I have to eat on the road (then there's the gas).

Good idea about the baltimore thing! A friend did that once for Vegas and met us there!
Yea we thought about it long and hard....I kinda even wanted to fly and I HATE flying! DH wants to drive though (Maybe it was the horrible flight we had down with the kids last year? lol nothing like an aborted landing with a lap baby that was going bonkers for 2.5 hours with our whole family sitting separated and me and my fear of flying? lol )DH works from home, so he doesn't have to take time off. I am a teacher so I already have it off. We will save about $500 (that is using the cheapest airfare we have found), which would be worth the hassle if we had an extra 500! That also is not factoring the cost of a rental car, since we are not staying onsite. So I guess we would save even more. We got a great deal on a house and want to be able to spread out and chill with the rest of the family going after the kids go to bed. Definitely pros and cons to both!
We always drove as a family when I was a kid. Doesn't feel natural to fly to Disney! I need to see my South of the Border signs!

OOOPS misread departure...yes if you are getting to DC around 8 then you should be okay. It might be a bit congested at Quantico but you should be okay. Didn't mean to scare you, but unless you are Santa himself avoid 95 through DC on christmas eve afternoon evening rush.....Good luck and say hi to Pedro for us.

Have you thought about this for an option?
Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel

You can go down Rt 1 & 13 in DE to the bridge/tunnel, end up in VA Beach and take Rt 17 the rest of the way. I have vivid memories of taking this route as a child to go to FL and VA Beach for vacation. Also, the traffic may be worse in DE on RT 95 than anywhere else. They have 2 toll booths and it just backs everything up for miles (usually 10s of miles)

Also, I would highly recommend getting an EZ-Pass if you do not already have one. It will save you serious time on this trip regardless of which route you take.

So funny you mentioned that! We did it twice as kids. I mentioned it to DH and we decided no since it adds more miles BUT we didn't consider it might actually be faster for us! Great suggestion!

Anyone know anything about the traffic there?

We have EZpass thank goodness. Last trip to SC, MIL did not and we got so annoyed having to wait for them after every toll!

I also do remember it taking like 2 hours to get thru 5 miles of DE on 95!

ok, leaving at 245 we would plan not to get to Fayetteville until 1 am. Over 10 hours.
Other way....an hour and half or so to Cape May ferry. Then take the ferry. From Lewes, De to Fayetteville it is 7 and half hours. 9 hours without the ferry.
Question is how is the traffic from DE to MD to get to the tunnel?

OK bummer, just checked out the ferry schedule that goes from Cape May NJ to Lewes, DE. They leave at 230 and 6. Waiting till 6 would be too late. So forget about thole ferry thing, but I could still take the tunnel if we
drive west thru Jersey, then down straight south thru DE and MD to get the tunnel. DD loves tunnels and bridges. That is 10 hours with no traffic. I have no idea what the traffic would be like on that route (route 13 and 113).

The traditional route gives us 8 and a half hours, with planning to stop or sit in traffic for 2 so that is over 10.

it is a good thing we have a while to think about this!

Thanks again for the info!

Just a thought...wait to leave until about 6 or 7. You'll avoid traffic and the kids will probably fall asleep later in the trip (translation - quiet time!). Think about not rushing to get out of school and hurrying everyone.
Another thought...a half day substitute for your class!

Enjoy your planning and holiday trip!

Hmm what if we leave around 5, putting us near Baltimore around 730/8, instead of getting to Baltimore at 5 and waiting. That is a good idea too. Either way we are going to get to Fayetteville at 1am. I am not too concerned about the Turnpike south in NJ, however once we get into DE it could be a problem around 630ish?

Wish I could get a sub. They put the cabosh on half days this past year. No personals before or after a holiday as well. :(

I'm not familiar with the traffic patterns north of Maryland, so I don't know how much traffic you'd run into in NJ and DE if you leave at 5. But if you get to Baltimore around 7:30, you'll miss all of the traffic in Baltimore and DC and will be able to drive straight through with no delays (unless there is an unusual incident like a major crash).

absolutly without a doubt you will be sitting in traffic for hours. There is no "maybe" and no wishful thinking
