My DD picked a different name for my Grandbaby.... Brynlee BUt they could have named her Cheeseypoof and I would have still been in love with her

My son's name is Liam and the nurse was asking me how to pronounce it. When I told her "like Liam Neeson" she went on to explain that they had another patient whose name was spelled L-i-a-m, but was pronouned "yum". She said the mom of the child told her he was named after his dad whose name was William (pronounced Wil-yum).

Oh for heaven's sake.

I know someone that just had a baby yesterday, named him Rocco.

These poor kids actually have to grow up with these names...

Well, I have to wonder if they named him after the baseball player - Rocco Baldelli (He plays for the Red Sox this year and last year for Tampa Bay). And I have to admit I've heard this name before - but I have a lot of Italian relatives.

What bothers me is that people feel they have to be different; for example Loralei Nichole; Lorelei is the traditional spelling as is Nicole. Why change a letter/add an extra letter? The name is fine just the way it is; it doesn't really make your kid stand out from their peers as really how many people actually see their name spelled out. I'm a perfect example of this; in Kindergarten when they called my name, all 9 of us with that name turned our heads because really no matter how you spell it Krys is pronounced the same as Chris and as Chrys and as Kris and Cris O yeah, that different spelling really made us stand out .

For that matter, my cousin, who did this for her dd, it's Allyson instead of Allison, now gets raging mad when people spell her dd's name wrong and can't understand why she can never find any personalized souvenirs (you know, cups, magnets, keychains, etc.) with the "correct" spelling - um, yeah, you're the one who was soooo proud that you were spelling her name differently .

Not sure if I put this on the list, but my boys noticed an "Alley" on the page of baby names/photos! Alley, as in the thing you should usually avoid!

My niece's middle name is Alexandra instead of Alexandria because my sister misspelled it on her birth certificate! I went to school with a girl who was supposed to be name "Lynda" but the registrar named her "Kynda" instead - the family went with Kynda instead!

Not sure if I believe this one or not, but my 20 yr old daughter's boyfriend swears that he works with a girl whose name is La-a. It's pronounced La dash uh.

People will grow tired of the "unique" names because everyone's name will be unique, therefore, not making them unique anymore -- just a name that is strange (and they do keep getting stranger as everyone tries to hold onto that "unique" name).

I predict that in several years, many of the traditional names will make a comeback because the kids with unique names now will grow up and realize that they don't want to put their kids through the same headaches they went through.

Growing up with the name Keri I grew use to never finding suvies with my name on them. It was always Carrie or occassionally Kerry. So my mom got creative and would occassionally order personalized pencils or use a special marker and add my name to things. Since my DDs have unusal spellings of their names I don't expect to find souvies with their names, but am prepared to write them on for them.

Mainly when we run into unusual names at work, it's usually from a certain population demographic who love to give their children unusual names.

My cousin did give his 2 children Celtic-type names.

I'm completely used to not finding souvenirs with my name on them, unless I go for stuff with my first name (common) instead of my middle name (less common). I've grown completely used to automatically having to spell my name for people. And at conventions, getting stuff signed, I just show them my badge.

These people do not realize what they are doing to their kids! Kids get really embarrassed and mad when people continually mispronounce & misspell their names. Some end up going by their middle names if they are not too far out there.

A friend of my DD's name is Ceili. So, how did you read that? Did you read it like "See-leee"? Everyone does, but the poor kid's name is pronounced like Kailey! "Cei" does not say "Kay" though! Grammatically, it says "see". It's no wonder she gets so upset because no one ever says her name correctly the first time -- no one.

There is no way in heck I would get Kailey out of Ceili- I would get either Silly or See Lee.

Really bizarre names annoy me. I never know how to pronounce them and then I feel stupid.

I never find ANYTHING with my name on it. It's not THAT uncommon is it? It's just Jade. Like the stone.

I have had my name pronounced like Jah-D though.

Yeah, but people should have some consideration for what their kids lives will be like when they grow up too. My DH has a child's nickname for a full name - no middle name. This causes no end of trouble both for him and for me.

The name itself is okay because he can abbreviate it and have it be a reasonably adult name. But as a teenager it resulted in no end of teasing from other students as the teachers read his real name at school roll call (so everyone knew his full name was a little kids nickname ).

And have you ever tried filling out official paperwork when your name or your spouse's is different? I've gotten in arguments with employees at agencies when they tell me I can't put a nickname on paper work. I'm talking the RMV, the school systems, the various insurance companies, the car dealership, potential employers (both his and mine); shall I go on? Yes, this is an ongoing issue for us. And yes it is a a major .

Or kids who's legal name is "Billy" or "Danny". Teachers think their name is actually "William" and "Daniel".

A friend of mine had teachers who kept trying to call him "William" and got upset when he wouldn't answer. His response: "That's not my name". His legal name? "Billy" Named after his father. Coulda been worse.... his father wanted to name him "Theodore Stanley" after 2 of his fav baseball players in the mid 60s.
