I am tent camping this August and have read the many posts on the August weather with interest. I know it will be hot and hopefully fans will work to cool the tent but I sure love the idea about the airconditioner (no room).

My concern is the rain. I have read that it rains every afternoon. Is this a downpour or a shower? We camped last summer at Kings Island in a new tent and while our day at the park was wonderful it rained horribly that evening and we ended up packing up the next day in the rain. Yuck! The tent stayed very dry but I worry about these things! ;) What ideas can you give me for keeping our gear dry?

When we were there last August we were lucky and only had a couple of days of rain, but we were prepared. We brought along a 12' x 20' tarp and a couple of poles from our dining canopy, a heavy rope and some lighter rope. We stretched the larger rope between two trees at our site and used poles and stakes to stake out the tarp for the rain to run off, then set up the tent under the tarp. We also brought the screenhouse for the picnic table. Had the entrance to the screenhouse under tarp also. It worked well, except the next time I would make sure that the groundcloth under the tent did not stick out at all. The only water we got was where it pooled between the floor of the tent and the groundcloth and seeped up through the seams in the floor. This was after about a two hour downpour. My DH thinks that we probably didn't need the groundcloth because of the sandy sites. There was room for cooler, and gear boxes under the tarp too. Hope this helps. WE had a great time and really didn't find it that hot. It cooled down nicely at night for sleeping.

We are alos tenting at FW in August for 12 days, myself and my 10 yr old. We need to drag everything down on a plane, so are basically only bringing backpacking equipment and food.

We tented in FW 2 yrs ago, although not in August. Basically it does seem to rain heavy daily, but storms don't stick around for long in general. If I can manage to carry it (we are currently making a bare bones packing list) I plan to bring along a large rubbermade container filled with food. I love these because the rain just rolls right off and it can be kept right on the picnic table, or in your tent if large enough.

When we tented 2 yrs ago, we had the luxury of a rental car (probably won't this time) and we went to Walmart and purchased 2 coolers (there were 6 people in our site). We then stored all food in the coolers.

I bought 2 great cots from LLBEAN catalog. They are lightwgt, easy to pack and carry and easily fit in a large suitcase. These do wonders at keeping you up off the tent floor. When we leave the tent in the morning, we store all clothing and bedding on the cots in order to keep it all dry.

The most important thing to do is close up the tents when you leave. Too often, we thought we were "airing" the tents, only to return in the afternoon to find it had poured.

Thanks for the replies! I plan on purchasing another tarp and using it to tie over the tent. Hopefully that will work. We do use rubbermaid containers adn I plan on keeping some of our stuff in the van. Not only will it keep dry but it will also allow us more room in the tent.

Any more suggestions?
