Me (38) – Many, many trips to WDW since 1972 and love it more each time!
DH (39) – Plays along with my obsession
DD (8) – 3rd trip and learning to love it as much as me!

11/28 – Magic Kingdom

We were up and out the door by 8:30. The skies were overcast and it was cool outside but that is fine with us. One of the reasons we come this time of year is the weather. We live in Texas and we have a pool so we don’t come to WDW to swim or do water parks. And, I get enough heat during the year – I don’t like to do Disney and sweat. For us, you just can’t beat the weather and crowds in November and December.

We grabbed a quick bite to eat at Captain Cooks – I love the chocolate croissants at WDW and look forward to them every year! Abby gets cereal and David gets some kind of eggs/sausage/hash brown combo. I know I am probably the only one on the DIS to feel this way but I actually have no problem with the Nescafe coffee served at WDW. In fact our local Burger King serves the same coffee and when I swing through there on my way to work to get a cup of coffee I close my eyes and I’m at WDW! So, I fill my mug with coffee and off to the MK we go. We hop on the monorail and 10 minutes later we are at the turnstiles (gotta love the monorail!).

The castle looks stunning. Pictures don’t do it justice. I was not a big fan last time they tried to trick up the castle and it looked like a big jar of pepto bismal. I thought I might have the same reaction this year but to my surprise it blew me away. In fact the whole park did – the Christmas decorations combined with the 50th celebration just gave the whole place an extra sprinkling of pixie dust.

We made a critical planning error. Usually we would head up Main St and knock out Fantasyland first thing. I don’t know why we strayed from this normal plan of attack but for some reason we vear to the left and start at Adventureland and work our way around. I won’t bore you with what we went on and when but I have to step up on my soap box for one minute *** I made my family sit though the Tiki Birds as this has been one of my favorites since I was a kid. I have seen the new show a few times and every time I do I walk out with a pit in my stomach. While I know things need to be updated I just think Walt would roll over in his grave if he saw this new show. There are some things that I think are sacred and should not be messed with – the Tiki Birds Tropical Serenade was one of them. I know a lot of people think it’s great but I reaaaalllly miss the original version. I’ve decided I’m not going to visit this attraction again – it just makes me long for the good old days. Ok – off soap box – thanks!***

By the time we got around to Fantasyland it was PACKED!! I felt like I was in one of those nightmares I begin having about 3 months before we leave for WDW – where we are checking out of our resort and realize we had not ridden one ride and it was time to go home. We walked all over Fantasyland and couldn’t find anything under 30 minutes. Some were up to 75 minutes. So, quick executive decision on my part – we would skip FL and stop by at rope drop on Wed on our way to Epcot and focus on only this section of the MK. It felt very strange spending the day at the MK and not taking a spin on the teacups or flying through Neverland or sailing on the happiest cruise that ever sailed – these are all what makes the MK magic to me – but I just wasn’t willing to spend all day in line.

Lunch today was at Liberty Tree Tavern. I hadn’t eaten here since I was little and the lunch menu looked more appealing to me than the dinner menu. We were also going to catch wishes that night so I didn’t want to do a sit down dinner when we had to get a spot for Spectro by 6. Our CM was very nice but very slow. It took us almost an hour and a half to eat lunch here! The food was good but nothing great. I had the clam chowder and turkey sandwich. David had the crab cake (very good size) and the William Penn pasta (pasta in a cream sauce with chicken, bacon and mushrooms). Abby had the mac and cheese which was Stouffers but she really enjoyed it. Growing up in Philadelphia and Connecticut the theme of LTT really appealed to me and I loved the way it was decorated. I don’t know that this will become a must do on our list but sit down meals are limited in MK and we would eat here again.

We spent the afternoon in Tomorrowland and on Main St. Another attraction worth mentioning is CoP – I was so happy it was open since this is low season. Every time we are fortunate to see it I wonder if it will be my last. Abby loved watching “Mr Disney” on TV outside in the queue area and I tried to impress upon her the importance of this attraction – don’t know that she got it but she did enjoy it!

It had been showering off and on all day but nothing heavy. We reached in our backpack for the ponchos we brought from home and – uggghhh – David had left them out on the dresser as he was packing the backpack for the day. One of us should have run back to the Poly to get them but it really wasn’t raining that hard so we just forged ahead.

We scoped out a good spot on a bench by the castle for Spectromagic and wishes and met a very nice family from Ohio – we meet the nicest people while waiting for parades and fireworks! About 10 minutes before Spectro was going to start it started to POUR – I mean POUR! There we sat – like 3 wet rats – I was just kicking myself for not going back to the Poly earlier and getting the ponchos. It was too late to even make our way into the shops to buy some – we were soaked and it showed no signs of stopping. Feeling sure they would cancel wishes we said goodbye to our new friends from Ohio and headed down Main St with a couple thousand more people that had the same idea. By now it was a blinding rain. The Emporium was so packed you couldn’t even duck inside for cover. Oh well – a monsoon at WDW is still better than a sunny day at home, right? Right? I kept telling myself that was the case anyway!

On to the monorail we go and by the time we got back home to the Poly the rain had tapered off – figures! We were soaked and changed into some warm, dry clothes. We didn’t have an ADR for dinner as I had planned on just grabbing Casey’s while waiting for wishes. We didn’t really feel like Captain Cooks greasy food and didn’t want a big meal at Kona so we headed over to the Tambu Lounge for a drink and snacks. This ended up working out great. It was Monday night so Monday Night Football was on the big screen. David ordered a beer, Abby got a Mickey Mouse (Shirley Temple) and I had a Backscratcher – wow! We ordered Chips and Salsa (wontons and pineapple salsa), the cheese plate and the egg rolls and shared them. This was tons of food and more than satisfied our snack craving. I was bummed we ended up missing wishes as this was our only chance to see it this week – the only other time it was going to be shown was our Candlelight Processional dinner package night. But, it ended up being a nice relaxing night. We normally don’t take the time to just sit and have a drink and chat – we are usually so exhausted we just dive into bed – so, it all worked out.

We ended up back in the room around 10 and crawled into our nice warm beds. It was really chilly with the rain and the air was starting to cool off. The forecast called for rain the next morning so we made sure to put our ponchos in the backpack tonight!

I am so enjoying your reports! I love how you take a dissapointment and find the positive, like when you enjoyed a quiet night at the hotel. That is the best way to experience a vacation. Thanks for sharing!
