Annual Pass Ticket Question

We haven't been to WDW since the advent of tickets assigned to specific days and making a park reservation for each day. We have a trip planned for our extended family next summer, and I am getting ready to buy 10 day park hoppers for each person.

We just got word that my daughter's high school marching band is planning a trip to WDW for the following spring break (2023). With that in mind, I am considering buying an annual pass for myself since I would be going on both trips. I'm hoping for a discount on our on-site hotel as well as being able to take advantage of some food and merchandise discounts - and have a lower overall ticket price as well.

Thanks for reading this far! My understanding is that when I buy an annual pass, I get a certificate that I exchange at the parks for the actual annual pass. My question is how would I reserve days in parks with my family prior to getting the actual annual pass?

Once you purchase the pass and it is recorded in MDE, you can make park passes and book resorts with discounts (if available) before activating the pass at guest services and visiting a park

Thank you so much. I didn't realize the pass would be usable for park passes before it was "activated".
