Annual Pass Purchase Process

I apologize for such a basic question, but I couldn't find info on the best strategy for purchasing an AP. I'm a Disney vet and a Universal newbie (kids just getting to that age).

If I buy an AP online, is it active as soon as I purchase? Or, do I activate it when I arrive for our first visit?

I will be booking a hotel based on the AP rate, and I know I don't need the pass until I check in. I simply don't know the best/most efficient way to go about purchasing the pass. Any info would be welcome.

You can purchase the voucher online through US, AAA etc. Then you take the voucher for exchange at your Universal hotel kiosk or the front gate. If is activated on the first use through the turnstyle. So your pass will begin on the first day you enter the park.

I bought mine online with Will Call kiosks as my pickup option. Went to the kiosk, gave them the info they needed (and by "they" I mean "the computer), out came my AP with my name on it and everything.

Went straight on to the turnstyles, and it was active that day.

Hotel checkin...they'll let you know when you need to show it to them. It's not needed that first day, don't worry about that.
