This little phrase would be enough to discourage me from buying only a child's AP. not that I worry since everyone in my family has them.

Everything Disney says that, including the adult pass. It's not like you are losing something..the child will have an AP to use as their ticket. They are especially helpful, when the child goes to Dis with grandma one time, and mom another time..both can get a discount room on each visit. If just Mom has it, it won't help grandma. I was just answering the OP's question. Yes, you may use a child's AP for your room. Have been able to for years, and at this time, it's not scheduled to suddenly change.
