We are DVC members that took advantage of the special annual passes offered a year or so ago- the Platinum Plus. Ours will expire in September. If we wanted to renew, could we renew to a different annual pass? Are renewals less expensive than the initial price of a pass?

TIA

Yes and yes. You can downgrade your pass to any ticket you are eligible for, and renewals are about $60 plus cheaper.

So we could downgrade to a gold pass and get the renewal rate of $517? Do renewals have to be done at Disney?

You can renew in person at Disney or by calling Member Services no more than 60 days before or 30 days after your current AP expires. If you renew by phone you’ll have to activate the new pass in person at a ticket window or Guest Relations before you use it for the first time. The DVC member will have to show their blue card, and every adult age 18+ will have to show photo ID with the same address as the DVC member.

Has anyone seen the blackout dates for the Gold AP for 2020? This will determine if I renew ours.
No, I have no official dates, but...
They are generally a week or so either side of Easter, and I think about a week before Christmas through around Jan 2nd.
I could be off, but that’s roughly it.

If you’re visiting close to Easter or the Christmas through new year holidays, than yes, you need the exact dates. If not, you are safe with gold.

This is the way I approach renewals...
For me, an AP is generally a good purchase if I can get two trips out of it, and it is a great purchase if I can get three trips out of it. So, for example, if I go on May for a week, December for a week, and the following April for a week, I’ve gotten really good value from the AP. But I would not renew, because I am probably not going again until December, so if I renew, I would have 8 months unused, and I would get only one trip out of it. So I would wait until December and pay for a new AP, and start the cycle again.

But everyone is different, so you would have to see what works for the way you do Disney.

Bought GOLD pass a few weeks ago. This was part of confirmation email:
