Annoying EPCOT Rumor

I mean, to be fair, that's what Disneyland always was.

But it's not what Epcot always was.

It's not what MGM studios always was.

The great thing about Disney for many years was that it had 4 vastly different parks. Now I'd argue it's got Animal Kingdom and then 3 versions of Magic Kingdom with an oddball world showcase shown in which has been neglected for decades.

On the other side of the coin - Animal Kingdom is pretty much the half-day park like MGM was for the most part and arguably HS and Epcot border on today. As pristine as it might be to adhere to the vision - its not a draw without appealing attractions. Tastes and attitudes change. Personally, I don't want Animal Kingdom to change because it's like an oasis amongst the chaos,

Adhering to the vision is nice and all, but if you aren't winning the hearts and minds - they go elsewhere.

Hearts and minds is exactly what old Disney was after. New Disney is after your cash. Nothing more, nothing less.

The vision is what developed Disney into what people would call a stable, solid longterm investment bet. In today's corporate world people don't want lifelong slow and steady growth.

Did old Epcot get stale? Absolutely, but even in today's world where they had a plan to revamp spaceship Earth completely, they chose to mothball it. It took them 35? Years to put
1 single new b or c ticket ride into world showcase. How many years did they futz around with Captain EO and they still haven't found a replacement?

I agree with you in the sense that Disney World was turning into a museum (hello MK) but....

Anything can get boring if you choose not to fix it over that length of time. We can thank the end of Eisner, all of Iger and the beginning of Chapek for that.

Disney needs an imagineer as a CEO and Roy running the books.

The thing that gets me is that WDW never had an issue drawing people in. Even before SWGE, Pandora, TS Land, GotG etc. I don't understand the need to fix something that wasn't broken.

Well, the issue was that it was drawing too many people in, and thus needed to build new things to accommodate. Now, what they chose to build was definitely based on the popularity of certain franchises and recent acquisitions - but those franchises are popular for a reason. They do have to add the things that people want to see. Some complain that Disney builds too much new Marvel & Star Wars stuff, but the fact is they've been building the Disney stuff for 50 years or more, so there is already a lot of it. The new stuff skews slightly differently, which is exactly what they need at the moment.

Lots of good stuff in your post and the ever changing dynamic to manage - and Disney would benefit from a "Walt"/"Roy" combo again at the helm.

Oh no am I the only one that misses Maelstrom? It was so damn cool and I love the whole Norwegian mythology! I mean Frozen is just...meh. Maelstrom had that old Disney ride nostalgia for me.
No, you are not the only one. We loved Maelstrom. Not only was it a must ride every time we went to Epcot, we usually rode it more than once. It fit perfectly in the Norway pavilion (and yes, it's Norway not some fictional land). We did ride Frozen once a few years ago and didn't care for it at all. It was laughable how little effort they put to in the revamp - it's basically just a cheap overlay of Maelstrom. And we thought the Elsa and Anna animatronics were kind of creepy looking. They seem to have improved that technology with MMRR, so maybe someday they will update those animatronics. But right now - they just look weird to me. On a positive note, I will admit the Sven and Olaf animatronics are adorable. The only other good thing I'll say about Frozen is that when we walk by and see that long, long line we know that's just less people competing for things we want to do. It's a great people suck - so I'll give it that.

We’ve never had the opportunity to ride Maelstrom, but I think we would have liked the storyline better than frozen. But that’s just us. Frozen we such a big thing when they revamped Maelstrom so I get it. Just saying I think we too would have preferred Maelstrom over frozen.

That makes sense. I guess the issue is that the new stuff is drawing even more people in, so maybe they made it a bit worse than it was??

I honestly don't understand the hate for "too much IP" it's Disney World... literally a World Full of Disney.... that's why we love it
I think the issue isn't with the IP itself but rather how the IP is being used in attractions. In a lot of cases it feels like the IP is being shoehorned into rides that didn't previously have any and it feels like an underwhelming experience.

Exactly. For instance Frozen. I don't hate the IP or having a ride for it. I hate how they incorporated into the park with a cheap overlay.

Ratatouille....great IP use. Frozen. Bean counter IP use. Test Track... ruined because of sponsorship IP.

They could have easily done something educational with the big bang and guardians to have the best of both worlds but the IP currently has no business where it is in Epcot regardless of the ride quality.

I think, a lot of the IP hate is coming from frequent visitors to WDW and/or locals. My family went once, we knew then that we most likely would never go again and had limited time. By choice we skipped most of the educational pavilions in EPCOT, I think we only spent time at the aquarium and at the plant hydro thing because it was a boat ride ... and we didn't understand Journey into Imagination. I remember thinking that if I wanted to learn about X stuff I could read a book back home, we went to Disney for rides, and as international visitors it was also kinda boring for my kid sibling who didn't fully understand english.

I can't imagine we are the only ones that have ever thought that. And while I appreciate the intentions of it, for us back then and for me right now it doesn't seem worth WDW prices $$$ imo.

and now we have the internets and disboards ...

Oh, no question about that! Disney is a victim of their own success. They own all of the most popular things now and they are drawing the crowds to it.

Indeed, now I can watch a youtube video on X on my couch instead of wasting park hours I could be going on rides. It honestly baffles me that lots of folks want more educational pavilions. There are so many better places to go to for educational experiences like interactive museums that are way cheaper and probably better on the educational front. :confused3

There is something to the original vision - a uniqueness - Epcot was and is my favorite park for many of the pre-IP era reasons folks have stated. But what worked in the 1980s versus 2022 is largely different - including your observation of alternatives. Its a mixed feeling for me, because I don't like the jagged edges of hodge-podge theming regardless of how well executed they are. So either go one way or the other I guess
