annoying dog next door

My DH and I are at our wits end. We live in a subdivision so houses are pretty close. My neighbor has a bassett hound that barks almost non stop. When we sit on our back deck or when the kids go out to play he comes to the fence and barks the entire time we are out? We yell at him to stop. We have complained about it to the neighbor. They don't do anything. They know it is happening Should I call her every time we go outside and have her put the dog up. They go on vacation and leave the dog, someone comes to feed him, but he howls and barks all night while they are gone. I don't know what to do. If I do too much I won't be able to live beside them. Any advice is welcomed. Thanks.

BTW, I have a dog also. So I'm not against dogs. Our dog is an inside dog. We take her in the yard to play and for exercise, but when she barks we put her inside.

I would spray the dog with a hose every time the dog barks while you are out there. Obviously the dog has had no training and gets not attention and there isn't much you can do about that. You could try calling animal control too.

We have tried the water hose and even water guns, but the dog runs when we get close to the fence. I thought of calling animal control, but won't they tell them that we called and complained. I'm not sure if I want that tension between us. I'm getting closer to that though. Thanks for your response.

WOW! That is awesome. I am going to look into this. Thank you! I wanted to buy them a bark collar and ask them to use it, but maybe not. Something I can put in my yard is a great idea.

My only concern with using this product is my own dog. Does it hurt them or its just bothersome? Wonder if my dog could hear it in the house?

Some communities have barking ordinances. Most certainly have noise ordinances during the nighttime hours.

OP, wish I had advice for you. All I can say is that I understand!

Our houses are REALLY close together. Like the neighbors' gate is 2 feet from my dining room window. They have 2 big dogs. The one dog barks. I think the big dog might be too annoying to have in the tiny house, I know I'd not get one that big in these itty bitty homes. ANyway, the dog as it grew (St BErnard) got left outside more and more. I won't exaggerate and say it barks "non-stop." It just barks OFTEN. And it is VERY loud, and very annoying. Now it's to the point where as soon as I hear it make 3 barks, my hackles are up because I KNOW the dog is out for many more hours. It barks 5 times at a squirrel, then 4 minutes later, it barks 3 times at a kid on a bike, then 6 minutes later it barks 22 times at a dog in the backyard diagonal from its own yard. 3 minutes later, it barks at the gate (RIGHT outside my window) because it's lonely (that is where its family comes in and out of the yard). THen......................................................and so on................

Starts by 8am, continues till about midnight with brief spans of time when it's in the house. But it always gets kicked out again, rather quickly.

We have no noise ordinance in our city, all the police can do is ask the neighbors nicely to consider keeping the dog inside a little more.

ACK. Making me REALLY be sick of dogs. Bad thing is, the neighbors' dogs are really sweet and friendly, it's just becoming a pet peeve of mine (pun intended).

Sounds like we are in the same boat. I know that this dog is lonely, but when we have tried to befriend him he runs. I'm hoping when the neighbors go on vacation for spring break and we can try to calm him or something. He has the worst bark. My vet says Bassett's like to just hear themselves bark. ugh!

Used one of these on my neighbors 4 dogs that barked 24-7, or should I say used to bark 24-7. It does actually work.

I may try one. I'm going to go to PetSmart today and see if they have them. Cross your fingers.

Yeah, we have a similar pooch as our neighbor...family pretty much ignores the thing, in all the time they've lived here I have seen them take it for a walk ONCE. We call the dog "DumbDumbBarksALot". I almost don't like the nicer, sunny weather because... we go out in our back yard? The dog barks. We have our back-door open and the TV is on? The dog barks. We walk out to our cars? The dog barks. We walk by their yard? The dog barks.

Actually, one time my DH slipped-up and called the dog "Hey there DumbDumbBarksALot" and the husband was out in their yard .

We have one of these, they do help (unless the dog is incredibly obnoxious like our neighbor's dog, he just stands in front of it and howls). Their other two dogs have completely avoided the back fence near where I hung it from a tree once I put it up. My dogs know where it is and they just stay away from it.

Unfortunately we're renting and the fence is chain link so our neighbor's dog stalks the fence all day hoping for a glimpse of our dogs, DD or any movement in the house through a window. He'll even go to the corner where he can see the front yard and bark at DD when she's riding her scooter on the driveway. I know it doesn't bother the owners because they'll be sitting in the front yard and watch the dog bark at everything.

The only reason I don't call animal control is because I'm sure they'll retaliate and I'm really, really hoping to be out of this house mid-May. Here your first call to Animal Control is protected, but after that you have to face the accuser in court. These people know it's just me and DD living here, so I don't want to risk it.

OP- this situation stinks.

My parents live next to a horrible dog (and I LOVE animals). It's been there since I was probably 7. It howls and barks all the time. We call it "BMB"- Big Mouth Beagle.

I think the Amazon link another poster provided would be good! Or, the supersoaker idea- but I'm not sure how keen your neighbors would be if you were squirting their dog..

I wish I had better advice- but I feel your pain! Hope you find a solution quickly!

I would NEVER do anything physical to someone else dog. That is just asking for problems. My best advice is just ignore it. You yelling and it is of course going to make it bark.

Our next door neighbors used to leave their dog out all day and all night and it barked constantly. We tried talking with them about it on multiple occasions, but nothing changed. We ended up having to call the police. The police did come and since then they have kept the dog inside. They knew that we called and they were angry, but I personally don't care one bit. The dog's constant barking was ruining our quality of life.

I will caution you that getting the police involved over the dog soured our relationship with the neighbors completely. We were not friends to begin with but it made things very testy for quite a while.

We had the same problem years ago with the neighbors who lived behind us. DH tried asking them several times to keep their dog from barking at night. It would get better for a while, but eventually it would start up again. You could always tell when she didn't have to work the following day because the dog would be outside untill the wee hours of the morning barking nonstop and keeping us awake.

I got sick of it and called the police. They paid her a visit and that took care of the problem. Of course, she was furious and came to our door demanding to know why we didn't approach her about the problem first. Well, we did (many times) and it did absolutely no good!

There is no way I'd just ignore it, though.

Before my parents moved they had this problem. They called animal control. The people did not know who called and actually thought it was another neighbor They were talking to someone else about it so that is how my dad found out they did not tell who it was that called and that they thought it was someone else, the guy who also had a dog. If you cannot do that, have them hate you who cares you need sleep and peace and quiet. Good luck!

Just wanted to share my opinion on this product - we got one and used it successfully for about two weeks, and then the dogs just ignored it and now its pointless. They still bark, and the high pitched noise it emits doesn't deter them at all.
