Has anyone done this activity on board? What is it exactly?

Looking at some old Navigators, it seems to be offered on port days while most people are off the ship.

Not sure, it might be the one where they teach you how to draw different animated characters.

We didn't do it on-board, but we have at Aulani. I assume it's the same... the animation cell itself is a clear plastic sheet (the size of a piece of paper) with black outlines of a character. Maybe you've gotten one of the souvenir animation cells in the mail after a parks visit? If yes, it's that kind of plastic sheet. Since it's just printed with black outlines, you paint it, however you want. Takes a while to dry, which is sort of a pain when you're on vacation, but it's a cute souvenir. It's possible they strategically plan that for port days b/c there is a limit to how many people they can have paint at one time. At Aulani, you had to sign up for a session for that very reason.

Cell is short for celluloid. The cells are clear so they can be placed on background artwork, then filmed frame by frame for animated films with 18-24 hand-drawn frames per second. Which is why Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs took 3 years to produce. The advent of computers has really sped up the process.

Trivia time -- back in WWII, celluloid was in demand for weaponry, so many of the cells -- original artwork -- from the Disney animated classics were scraped clean, and used to make munitions. So sad.

I have done the "open house" animation cell activity and it was quite fun. You were given a plastic cell which they had a few different ones to choose from. You then painted the back of the cell so that it looked nice from the front.

Thanks for the info. The kids really like to do the Disney crafts, but I wasn't sure if it was worth cutting our time in port short.

If its just for the kids, my understanding is they get to do it at Craft time in the lab if they want to so it might be worth talking to the CMs in the Oceaneers lab about whether there will be a session.
